8 speed rear deraillier on a 9 speed cassette?

Thats an interesting one, I was always advised to keep to the same size chain, Its good to know it does work as Im sure one day 7/8 chains will be as rare as rocking horse you know what

Was it shimano HG chain or Sram ?

9 speed chain will be no good with 7 & 8 speed setups, 9 speed is narrower as the sprockets on a 9 speed are closer together to fit on the freehub.

No, the chain is narrower overall, but the 'holes' are still big enough to fit on 7 and 8 spd sprockets. Sprockets are closer together but i don't think they're much (any?) thinner, it's the spacers that are smaller.

Not sure if the same holds true for 10 spd though.

mines a sram i never use shimano chains ive also found that the cheaper non plated sram chains last miles longer than the flashy plated ones.

Shimano chains, in a word, no.....
Don't use one of their pins, and you'll be cursing, it's only a matter of time!

Sachs (Sram) chain everytime, i've never had any problems with using a 9 on a 7/8, or the other way round. But, i'm not the sort of rider that panics when i don't get smooth changes.

.Only 5 speed mechs are not compatible with 6,7,8, and 9 speed systems. :D :D

I have a mid 60's road bike with a Gran Sport rear mech. AFAIK that mech was made for 5 speed and it's running 6 ATM.
