i've snaffled a 700c commuter on ebay thats local to me & was hoping to us it for a donor wheelset for my roadbike / commuter for when i'm not going to be on the road all the time (towpaths etc.)

are there issues with rear axle width or rim position against caliper brakes that might cause issues? i've not picked it up yet but i'm trying to get a plan of action sorted in my head! if all else fails, i'm gonna see if the 700c wheels will fit an old marin frameset i've got lying around spare!

Depends on your roadbike or the type of hybrid the wheels come from. Trekking type hybrids have rims as wide as everyday XC bikes. Caliper road brakes should work fine but it depends on the tyre width as much above 32mm for most road brakes would be too much. Some hybrids though are more roadbike derived and may have narrower rims which means narrower tyres.
As for fitting 700c wheels to mtb frames again it should work but you'd either need to fit shorter reach caliuper brakes or fit a 700c brake stud convertor as the brake studs would not allow V brakes to reach the rims.
SJS Cycles have what looks like a brake booster arch that you bolt to the brake studs that has its own set of studs mounted further up allowing v brakes to be fitted.

£50 to convert the bike seems a tad OTT for the level of bike its going to be built on but it does give me a starting point (might try and adapt a cheap brake booster & see what happens).

I'll see what I can do when the donor arrives, worst case i'll just run those wheels on the commuter roadie & leave the marin hanging for another day!
