7 speed cassette on 9 speed wheels compatability

Hi All

Been chatting to a mate who says its possible to use the 9 speed xtr hubs i've got with the 7 speed cassette on my clockwork orange if i use a spacer behind the cassette,can anyone shed any light on this and does anyone have one?

wanted-xt retro chainset plus thumbies (7 speed)

Yes you can run a 7spd cassette on a 9spd wheel, with the correct spacer behind the cassette.

I have had different splines on 7 spd cassettes and 9 speed hubs, definitely didn't fit.
