Who doesn't love tight, er, residuals! 100% agree. VWs are also cool, as are Hondas.

Right. The boss has got involved so I now have criteria that are fixed (yes dear) Before you start arguing about them, remember who set them.
Newer the better but up to 5/6 years old. 5 Doors, Diesel, £30 tax or less, Known brand (no skodas or hyundai, kia etc) under 50k miles over 50mpg and reasonably local, say 100 miles ish as she wants to see it first. No boy racer sporty nonsense.
Looking more and more like a Golf over a Focus. I tried quirky (volvo C30) and got a slap.

The "no Skoda or Hyundai" rule strikes me as being utterly insane! The most reliable and cheap to run car that we've ever had was a Hyundai, virtually nothing ever went wrong with it (until my wife killed it by driving it ten miles with no coolant, the completely shot radiator finally refusing to hold any.)
This was a car that had already been more or less run into the ground before we got it (for free!)
The view under the bonnet was a treat - nothing significantly more complex than you'd find on a decent lawn mower, no massive lumps of plastic prettiness or soundproofing.
The only problem with it was finding where it had been parked - it was so completely unremarkable you could walk past it several times without actually seeing it!
