6061, 7000 or 7005

Hmm. My Kona is Easton Ultralight. I thought this was quite high end but it seems its 7005. Anyone know where it sits in the range? It will affect the bits I hang from it ;)

As my post above, heat treated 7005 is high end, TOP, non heat treated is bottom, Easton Elite is heat treated
6061 in the middle.

So this isn't necessarily true?

6061 (aluminum/magnesium/silicon alloy) is generally considered superior to 7005 (aluminum/zinc alloy), though in some
respects 7005 can be stronger

It's all quite confusing, for want of a better word. .

IIRC, my Alpinestars Al-Mega XT was made from Easton 7075 aircraft ali.

My limited understanding is the 7005 is stronger but 6061 gives a more responsive ride. I've switched from a Kona Fire Mountain frame in 7005 to a Scott Scale 40 frame in 6061 and it does feel more 'alive' .... but that may just be the frame geometry.

However, I did notice that 6061 chews up easier from chain suck! :?

It's not uncommon for a company to put a fancy sticker on a seattube stating it has certain tubing , when in reality only the seattube is the fancy tubing

So where does titanium sit in this lot?
Nowhere. . . s'just about the aluminium innit ;)

Can't find anywhere to suggest GT mixed up the alloys but nothing would surprise me

I was just stirring.

I've never even owned a titanium frame. My current plan is to upgrade the Kona with top line stuff until the frame falls apart, then transfer it over to a custom ti frame of the best quality I can find.

It will last me until I die given that I only cover a weekly mileage of less than the combined circumference of the Rolly Polly's.

Similar-ish here.. I'll just buy the bits I like/can afford, hang them on whatever I have sitting here and ride it.. when a nicer frame comes along I'll swap some bits...
Added bonus for me is that I also get a little experience of how these things bolt together.. which I am in dire need of ;)

Significantly more than me then

If the heat treatment needed after welding is different for 6061 and 7005 (as suggested in that article) then I doubt this would happen as you create a frame that would severely weakend around the weld areas and prone to breakages.
The urban legend has probably proliferated due to the fact people are surprised that 6061 is now appearing on Aggressors when it used to be the stuff of exotica and some manufacturers used the trick with steel frames (heat treatment is not so much of concern on steel) BITD.
