51 Claud butler new all rounder

Hi bought this few weeks back just started stripping it back for the obviously needed repaint but...I’ve a few questions firstly are these cable ends on down tube original or later additions to run newer running gear and what would you honestly do with this brake bridge fiasco lol trim the newer one off or trim both off and start again at a frame shop lol oh and what’s with the copper colouring on rear stays?

Dude, all that crap’s gotta go.... even if you do want to Retro-Mod the build-up, I’m pretty sure you can find more elegant solutions...
As for the copper, I have seen rear stays & forks copper plated, it’s not just for 90’s BMXs!!!

The cable guide is later - below it is where a shifter boss used to be. It must have been removed by a troll, awful job. It will need braze run into it and filled, the cut is close to a tube butt and could become the start of cracking, which would be a pity.

On the brake bridges, it depends on what you are planning brake-wise. It's been done to fit 700c wheels. Personally I would rather run special deep drop brakes and keep the frame original. SO I would remove the kludged bridge and fit Tektro R559 brakes. Other opinions are available.

The copper plating is usually applied before chroming or nickel plating. Chrome plating is porous and the copper stops the underlying steel from rusting so fast.

That needs some TLC from a decent frame builder if you want this to be returned To a useable frame once again.....& safe one at that.....

im no frame building expert but i'd be worried (and probably reluctant to spend a lot on a refurb) because
1. as hamster says, his Dremel might have gone too deep on the tube around the lever boss
2. what heat might he have used to braze on the second bridge - would it have weakened the tube?

Thanks guys I’ve been in touch with lee coopers frame builders £60 to sort brake bridge fiasco and I’ll ask him to give it a once over before he starts make sure not wasting money,but frame only owes me £40 so no big loss if get work done owes £100 all in I can live with that lol

If you are getting them to sort the bridge, he should be able to place it in a happy average that would suit either 27" without mudguard clearance and 700 with long reach brakes....

Not keen on mud guards tbh,I might get him to just remove the newer bridge and the cable ends so it’s all original,I’m hoping I can run with my Shimano 600 arabesque /dura ace set up but my wheel are 130mm so going to have to look for some wheels....but I’ll wait a few weeks till he’s gave the frame the ok first...I’ve got a Tom Bromwich of Coventry frame to go at in mean time......

753 would lose its properties from heat (reversal of the heat treatment), and this pre-dates 753, so no worries. Overcooking 753 returns it to 531 as they are the same alloy.

A 753 frame has to be silver brazed, and this frame is clearly brass-brazed anyway.

I think copperplating was used by CB as a final finish? I remember a lad in school having a copper plated frame (I thought it was super) and it might have been a CB - but it was 60+ years ago!
