I guess that this would not be a problem if your axle is of a sufficient length.

These mechs will fit any Shimano E-type BB. The hole in the bracket is for a bolt that screws into the frame to stop the mech moving in the event that the BB comes loose. I believe that you can buy a clamp on mount for them, but I can't remember who made them.

As far as the crank clearance goes this isn't an issue if you use an E-type BB as the axle is offset to allow for the mech mounting plate. If you use an E-type BB without a mech of this type then you'd have to fit a spacer on the driveside, otherwise your chainline would be wrong.

If I had the money I'd have the 960 mech off you, but I don't, so I can't. :cry:
