What size is the headtube ? Taper or non taper.
Designed to be able to run either.

How modern is the frame. Is it designed to run a external cup?
2017/18 I think. Yes.

Is the fork tapered ?
No.

So it’s a straight 1/18th headtube ?

Some modern frames people assume can run non tapered forks as they are 1/18 but they are actually made for a external taper headset only and tapered forks. The reason that they are non tapered is because that’s cheaper to produce than the fancy tapered headtube.

A good example of this is the kingdom vendetta which comes in 2 versions with the X2 model being cheaper due to no cnc bits and normal headtube. However I was advised that it can only run tapered forks with the correct headset. I assume it’s for reasons that you are experiencing but I may be wrong.

Re:

That is the plan now I think. I can get by with the current set up, but get the correct parts and fit when I can.

Keen to get the build done so I can thin the collection of bikes I wont need.

Re:

Ok,so have my eye on a couple of forks. Some fox 32 fit 4 or some rebas I'm used to rebas but not used fox in anger. Which are better for xc and also longevity.
