Hi all
am a newbie with a retro Dawes on the way with bullhorn bars (eek) and i'm looking to return it to drops. its got an SR quill stem so assume i'm after 25.4 clamp diameter bars (but please shout if i am or could be wrong!). Not fussed about original and not looking to spend much but it needs to be 42/44 width and silver. Any ideas where I may be able to get something along these lines? a brief look online has only thown up the "charge bowl" bars, but no where seems to have it in stock. Thanks for your help and ideas!!

It's most likely 25.4 but don't assume that. They could have been changed at any point and could be 26, so it's best to check.

You've got a massive choice of second hand bars in 25.4mm. GB, Maes, Dawes, 3T, Raleigh just to name a few and plenty of unbranded ones. Original Dawes ones are quite common and are a very nice shape. You're best off hitting eBay and you should be able to turn a good pair up for no more than £15 delivered. On classic bars you're probably more likely to find them in 42cm wide than 44cm.

if you can find sr bars 25.4 in 42cm ill pay you double.
could try 'planet x' via bikenut's tip off[cheers]

Re:

Probably a bit narrow but this sort of thing should fit the bill:

I've a hunch that many British road bikes of the 70s/80s sported bars made by Chambers & Churchill but branded for Raleigh, Dawes, SR*, etc. They sometimes used a separate centre collar (as opposed to, say, ITM Millenniums where the stem clamps to a bulged centre part of the bar proper) although I don't personally recall any problems with this working loose.

*SR stems were, IIRC, usually Japanese but the bars seemingly made under licence in the UK. :?
