Picked up this rather sorry for itself Specialized the other day. Having now stripped it down I reckon it should make a nice light single speed conversion.
It’ll need new forks as the elastomers in the Suntour MG UL that are on it have long since perished.
I want to try and keep the original paint as despite many scuffs its not too far gone and should hopefully suit the budget theme of the build.
A wash/t-cut/polish has left it looking like this:

I’ll keep the thread updated as I go along. :)

It’s been a bit of a saga but once I got the crumbly biscuit old elastomers out.. the original forks have come up ok, win!
I’m going to try some new elastomers - there’s a guy on eBay who sells them you can cut to your own length. Worth a try as they seem pretty decent/light-ish and will look good on the bike. Nice learning experience for me too as I usually shy away from working on forks..

I remembered that I had some scruffy rock shox indy c forks and decided to take them to bits and see if I could use the elastomers from them and lo and behold they fitted straight in..

…which allowed me to crack on and build the thing.
It weighs 10.8kg and rides really nice with the skinny Gatorskins. The complete bike has a net cost of £0 as I sold the groupset for what I paid for the whole bike and built it with parts I had laying about.
Another one saved from being turned in to coke cans and kitkat wrappers, happy days..
