1996 Santa Cruz Tazmon build

Re:

Tazmon is up and running again with a yellow crank and race face bb. Really like the new setup. Going for a ride in the Mojave tomorrow.

Looks weird seeing it with cantis. My heckler had the mount but i never used it or seen one with cantilevers

Liking the build yeti_bomb. I find these kind of build threads more fun to look at than the perfect-replica builds - they're more like how we used to modify bikes in the 90's and mess around with a mix of parts!

Incidently, I now own Sean's Heckler frame (above). Haven't started building it yet - as i've got a couple of other builds to complete first. It will be a retro-mod build with some modern 100mm forks - that should generate some mixed views!

Go for 80mm, it really doesnt handle well with 100

Re:

Thanks for the heads-up Sean. I'm gonna try it with some 100mm's and see how I get on. If it's no good, I should be able to reduce the forks to 80mm.

Had a quick look at trying to find the original spec to see what it would have come with...looks like a 4" rear shock and a 4" early triple crown - like a Judy DH / XC. Take a look at a copy of the brochure below (taken from another thread on RB - hope that's ok?):

Re:

Yours is a later one than that, its a 1998 with a 1996 swing arm fitted, i reckon a pair of 2004 fox forks would look ace on it and you can run v brakes as well. I had 80mm pace rc36 forks on it originally and changed to 100mm bombers and the head angle became to slack. I should have stuck with the pace

Re:

I think 100mm is the only way for a Heckler, but that is my riding style. The Heckler was meant to be ridden hard. A real early play/freeride/trail bike. My bike that I'm building is a 1997 front and rear. It already feels real balanced with the 100mm Marz dirt jumper on the front. Check out Kranked 3 I think it is Dave Sweetland hucking mighty on a green one.

Re:

Correction. It was not Dave Swetland hucking huge in kranked 3. It was Joe Swartz on the green Heckler.

Re:

Just bought a 1996 Santa Cruz Catalog. Just the Tazmon and Heckler back then. Pretty interesting piece of history.

Z1's were what most people I rode with used on their early Hecklers, weren't they all 100mm?

Is there a decent size logo in the style of the "Santa Cruz" text on the downtube in that historic catalog of yours? If there is then I would love the most high resolution scan possible of it.
I want some replica decals for my Tazmon but I think creating that fill pattern from scratch accurately will be nigh on impossible.

I wonder if they ever made a 22" Tazmon, I'd guess it would be an ugly beast!

My scanner is broke. I need to get a new one. I'm starting to get a good collection of late 90s catalogs and bike reviews in mags. Would like to contribute scans to the archives. Seems most stuff in the archives is early 90s
