1996 Kona Fire Mountain (update 14/08/11)

Mountain bikes especially good name brands were pretty pricey in NZ in the 90's. I managed to buy a secondhand 1994 Kilaeau when I worked in Queenstown (outdoor fun feast capital) which I still have and use to this day. Love the ride and recently ditched the old school Rockshox and replaced with P2's and newer parts bought on Ebay. There's an US outfit on Ebay that sold P2 forks with fork to crown measurement of 410mm for hundred US bucks all up with postage that may be suitable for your bike. I bought a Kona Jake the Snake frame from them this year for a bargain and really quick in delivery.

OK... a little update.

I got the bike (finally) from the in-laws last weekend and am SO happy with what I have got. Yes it is a little chipped in places, but fair to say it hasn't been ridden hard. I would suspect that it has been used as a town bike and the battle scars are from locks and storage.

I gave her a clean and it came up brilliantly. The green frame colour is amazing and in generally the parts cleaned up nicely.

I got gifted a really nice set of Deore Thumbies (thank you so much FST4RD) and bought a et of P2's from a local auction site for only GBP13.00!! They are black (so not from the same year as the bike, but in great condition).

I installed the forks yesterday (first time ever doing this kind of thing) and put the thumbies on.

I will need some gear cable inners and some new grips to get her ready for the trail, but so far I am really happy with the progress. I plan on taking some pictures of my progress later today and will post them asap.

As promised some pictures.....

And a question... The Kona brake cable hanger. I have one of these to put onto my forks and I take I need some kind of nut on the back to hold it in place? Currently just have the cable hanger and bolt? Sounds silly... but I want to get it right!!

Still some stuff to do... but loving just spending time having a 'tinker'
