1996 KLEIN ADROIT 22" frame and MC2 handlebar/stem

Both of them are, in my strong opinion, Adroits based on the pics I saw in the ads.

The one in the eBay ad does look to have the smaller downtube but it doesn't come with any fork so I'm confused as to what you're referring. Please see my earlier comment indicating that some '96 Adroits used '95 Attitude tubes. Lastly, I'm assuming that you are saying that username "Adroit96" on MTB-news is Brian Parker and that's why you're referring me to Wundel to look at the bike?

Edit: I just went to Wundel and Brian Parker's bike is not the one for sale in any of the links I put in this thread. Sorry but I guess you're missing my point and I'm missing yours.

Jeff, Jens is correct here.

1) MC2 era Adroits did not have boron/carbon on frame
2) The bulges around the bottle mounts are reinforcements on a very thin tube. They have nothing to do with boron/carbon.
3) All 1996 Adroits when equipped with rigid fork did have a Strata fork even if they had an Attitude frame. I do not know any Adroits with originally installed Uniklein.
5) Some 1996 Adroits with Attitude frames still had X serial. So there were X numbered real Adroits and Attitude framed ones and then T numbered Attitude framed ones.
5) Burgundy Blue Linear was available on Attitude for extra price.

Appreciate the info Kai. I guess I'm still a bit lost on your definition of a "real" 'MC2 Adroit. Which '96 is more "real"?

1. MC2 frame with 2" downtube + Judy SL fork

or

2. MC2 frame with 1.75" downtube + Strata fork

Or are you saying that neither one of these should be considered a "real" Adroit and the only "real" ones are the 2" downtube + Strata forks? (Btw, I'm sure Klein considered ALL of the above to be "real" Adroits when they were selling them back in the day It seems to me that if a frame had a 1.75" downtube and a Judy SL fork than there wouldn't really be anything on it to distinguish it from an Attitude other than the Burb/Blue paint (which as you point out an Attitude buyer could special order). So for Klein to label the bike an Adroit, it would have to have something else that distinguishes it from an Attitude. The distinguishing factor would have to be either a 2" downtube OR a Strata fork (or of course having both 2" + Strata). No? :?:

the distinguishing factor for an Adroit frame is the 2" downtube. 1 7/8" is an Attitude frame. The downtube was the only part to distinguish an MC2 Adroit from an MC2 Attitude frame.
The forks are another story. The Strata fork is reinforced with carbon on the upper fork legs. The unicrown fork not.
If you put a Strata fork in an Attitude frame, the frame doesn´t convert in an Adroit frame. It remains an Attitude with a Strata fork.
An Adroit frame is an Adroit frame, regardless of which fork fitted (suspension or rigid). By the way, I never saw an Adroit with an unicrown fork. I think in ´96 KLEIN had still Strata forks in stock but no Adroit frames. The Adroit downtube was strip down by TREK.

I better understand your point now. Not sure I completely agree with it however. To me, it's similar to the debates Porsche 911 owners have - for some people, anything watercooled could NEVER be considered a 911 and for others they go further to insist that only the earlier 1970's models represent the true 911. I suppose one could draw a parallel with the Adroit and say that any of the MC2 Adroits, even 1994-1995, weren't true Adroits because they don't have the rear drop outs with the holes in them and they don't have boron/CF on key parts of the frame (thanks for that clarification, btw). In the end, the person looking to buy the bike will know best which features of the frame are important to them and decide whether or not it fits their needs and their price range.

Trust me the differences are noticeable and if your a true fan of Klein you'll love em both but for very different reasons !!

Interesting debate, in all summary, coming down to what you want, and if in your own mind the price is right (and the colour ). These last few years, I have learnt a lot about kleins. No taking away from an attitude, its still a great ride. And flyweight too. It was a strange strategy of klein, but the car analogy is also good. I think we can see with 95% of the retro brands we love, utimately, they all resulted in "watering down. . ."

Yeah, it's pretty hard to concede with this much evidence but sometimes we just gotta love what we have for what they are and not wish they are more than that.
