I'm a huge fan of the steel Univega Alpina's of the 1990's. My first 'real' MTB was a 1997 Univega Alpina 502 back in 1998 when I was a 20 year old student. That was always a bit big for me offroad so I ended up lending it to a taller family member. When this frameset came up on ebay recently in my size I couldn't resist, I always liked the colour scheme of this model. I'd been waiting 2 years to see one appear on ebay again. For £31 including original stem, dia-compe headset, bars, bar-ends, gripshifts and brake levers, it was mine.

I intended to build period correct but want this to be a 'rider' so a more modern grey-coloured groupset is on the cards (Deore LX 2006/7). Besides, the original 8 soeed gripshifts were in terrible condition. To be concluded.

Cracking frames :D
Very underated in my opinion, but then thats what makes them cheap :D :D
Mine is currently undergoing a revamp, but it used to look like this

UPDATE: most of the parts collected :)

The original Concept stem that came with the frame sale is badly tarnished with some kind of acid. It was hopeless trying to get it off - it had eaten right through the chrome. Rather than pay out to have it re-chromed I decided to get a replacement stem...

It's an ETC 120mm. It's retro enough and cost £7.99. I got it from ebay seller http://stores.ebay.co.uk/angpatten357

The original Concept bars are absolutely fine.

Grips are by Superstar Components.

Saddle is a trusty Charge Spoon in grey.

Brake levers are Deore LX BL-M571.

Shifter pods are Deore LX SL-M580.

Chainset is also from the Deore LX M580 group.

And the rear mech completes the M580 matching parts.

Those LX bits look NOS, have you been hiding these for this project or are they just in good condition?

Think the grey will offset the frame really well.

The shifter pods are new, the rear mech was a used ebay find, the rest I've had from new and been hoarding for some while - since 2007.

Yes the grey seems to work very well. Hope to get the final build pictures taken next week if the weathers fine
