1995? Raleigh Pioneer, £120

For sale is my Pioneer, thanks to impending move. There is a build thread for this somewhere. Spec is the same as there but I've swapped the front end for a more stealthy black-and-silver feel, and added some softer grips and nice bar ends. Frame is 19", 4130. 700c wheels mean it's ideal for sticking some slicks on and doubling as your commuter. I've had some lovely rides on this. Just a good honest bike really.

Price is offers based on £120, postage is possible.

I know, nice eh! I have one of the hi-ten ones in build too (same model as Al's ladies one), but this is substantially lighter and more chuckable. I think I've only ever seen one other.

Is it old enough for the rear drop outs to be sufficiently "horizontal" to run a fixed? And if so is it a screw on block rather than a cassette?

I wish I could say yes to induce a sale but... no. The rear end is "properly" vertical, and it's a cassette hub... Sorry! I think the older ones, like Dead Rats' one and my currently-building one, sport that spec, but this one tends more to the modern hybrid end of things really.

Few spacers & a doofer and you're laughing though, and then you've still always got the option of gears (or the next owner has...) :D

Thanks djoptix. Shame!

Can't run a fixed with a doofer (or any form of tensioner), elPedro.

Ah, fixed, sorry I just took it as singlespeed (despite you clearly writing the word 'fixed' :?  ). I guess a fixie would just rip a tensioner off then? Otherwise I don't see why you couldn't run a solid (not sprung) one?

Everyday's a school day at RB! 8)

I've long been of the opinion that yes in theory a RIGID tensioner could work (say dropped from chain stay). However, I've never found anyone that agrees and have never tried it! So I'm probably wrong.

The problem is that in effect any "braking" effort is trying to push the chain in reverse - think of the difference between pulling one end of a piece of string and PUSHING it. Goes all floppy - and in that scenario a chain will simply unship.

Whatever, it doesn't work in practice.
