I have exactly the same issue with a Trek Singletrack frame, after thinking about this i did not (yet) scrap it becauseIn general the tubes are still strong, BUT half the chainstay bridge came away with nippers. Inside where the bridge meets the chainstays I can push a sharp screwdriver through, although the rest of the chainstays are 'fine'
i came to the same conclusion.The chainstay bridge does add extra strength but is not really necessary especially if this is ultimately a knockaround type bike.
