Hi all,
It is time for me to part with my Lava Dome. It's pretty much all original as it was in '94 when i got it, it's had very low milage (less than 1000km) as it's pretty much just been a shop runner/ pub runner etc throughout the years...
So, this is obviously the 'road model!' - i didn't like the marz forks at the time, so went with the P2 forks instead. The Impact headset was a piece of crap too in my opinion, i didn't see the point in having to have a easy adjust feature to a headset. It came loose all the time, and a good headset should be set and forget, so i put a Shimano Deore XT headset in - best at the time.
Then there was the wheels, pretty flexy and overall poor handling, The shop i was working in at the time stocked Specialized, so i made up a wheelset of their best XC rims at the time (which i think were ambrosio's?) - the double wall sits really high so it almost looks like a tubular rim. So those were laced to LX hubs with Wheelsmith spokes. Very nice and they help complete the LX group. I also used a Specialized saddle instead of the stock one, the big S was actually a Turbo saddle rebadged! All genuine leather with cromo rails.
The rest is pretty much as it is in the '94 book. Sugino Impel cranks with original rings, Kona race light bars, seatpost, clamp and brake levers. Joe Murray's Velocity stem is great, I loved the direct access housing braze-on's. Deore top mount thumbshifters 3x7 - working perfectly. The STX front mech was swapped out for the LX, once again to complete the group
getting this bike ready for sale i stripped it down to the frame and ran the whole drivetrain through our Ultrasonic Cleaner which is a 2 stage cleaner and lube bath that puts a great protecting layer on the parts. New Specialized Nimbus 26x1.5 tyres installed, as well as Bontrager race lite foam grips (the old rubber ones were sticky as hell and i doub't anyone would want that!) and all the inner cables and outer housing replaced. (i still used 5mm casings to keep the era of the bike standardized) Cables are cut to length nice and neat, and the exposed brake lines have S&L NylaFlow pressure tubing to protect them from rusting up.
Frame dimensions are as follows:
H/T-145mm
T/T- 580mm (center to center)
D/T- 655mm (center to center)
S/T- 440mm (center to center/ 510mm center to top)
C/S- 430mm (center to axle)
S/S- 490mm (centre to axle)
and now for the photos...
So as you can see on e very well kept LD! - Now for the price. I was thinking a close to original, clean and low milage bike like this would fetch say, around the 300 quid mark? I'm not too fussed really, just need it gone as i'm simply running out of space, time and money at home!
The bike is over in Canada, but i'll sent it to the UK no worries. Anyone interested can post their area and ill get a shipping cost.
cheers,
james.
