1994 Kona Explosif

I always find it interesting how location plays a massive part in how rare or desirable a bike brand is which then directly affects its value.

GT is my likely favourite brand as we had one of the UKs largest dealers near to me. Which means we have an abundance of old GTs around here. ( But nothing on the scale of the USA near the factory) along with Kona being a close second.

What sort of money does something like a Explosif command in Argentina?

The retro bike market here is quite unique.

Back in the ’90s, there was a big wave of bike imports, mostly low to mid-range models. If I had to name a top three of the most common brands you’ll see around, it’d be GT, Trek, and Zenith — the last one being a local brand that made some pretty decent bikes.

These days, it’s quite hard to find mid-high or high-end bikes, so when one shows up in good condition, the price tends to be high. Basically, any high-end retro bike is considered desirable here, mainly because of how scarce they are.

Just to give you an idea — speaking of bikes in excellent condition — a Kona Hahanna might go for around USD 300, while an Explosif could start from around USD 1000.

Still, finding an Explosif for sale is extremely rare, just like spotting a GT Bravado or any other top-tier steel retro model.

Yes pretty much as I expected.

The retro content on my Instagram has a large amounts of views from countries which I wouldn’t expect such as Indonesia , Argentina, Peru etc - also mixed in with the more expected places.

If that’s the case ref prices - surely it’s worth importing them as frames?
