Apologies if I missed the answer or explanation elsewhere, but why did they/Doug use a wider rear axle? What was the reasoning behind that?

Oh and you have a double but but ;-)

At the very end of the run he made a handful of threadless versions of the stems, but but for the most part they never really made out into the hands of the customers
 
Nice, I sold my mint one a few months ago, I notice it's got an extra weld over the original weld under the seat post clamp at the top pivot point. Exactly where my Marin FRS has gone as did a friends......

Dishless rear wheel is stronger than one with dish, and an offset rear dropout allows for that.
