any excuse eh?.....

Just my opinion but those brakes are a downgrade to the old ones, and they are really, really badly set up, almost to the point of being dangerous.

I used the cantis on the clockwork as they are in better nick.......the cable is held at a jaunty angle by the grub screws on the straddle holder.....the slr levers pull through a lot of cable and when the brakes are applied it all pulls right with the cable at 90 degrees to the canti......they are impressively powerful actually.....

Okay, good stopping power, but maybe a little bummer you must use skinny tyres with this setup?

Personally I would go back to the XTs. They are decent brakes. The Tektros aren't really and fall short given the quality of the rest of the Yates.

Very nice retro build. Any pictures with knobblies on?

Yes, I have a set of tomac signatures in the cave, I just don't want to destroy them on the road, any decent off road riding is a car drive away and the bikes get regular use on Tarmac.....that is why I have slicks on most of the older bikes.....will post up knobbly pics tomorrow.....

They'd be a damn site better if you drew the brake pads in on the holders and raised the canti bodies until they were next to vertical. Then toe the pad in so that the front contacts the rim first. Finally the straddle should be at 45 degrees not at 5 degrees so that the cable is more than 5 mm off the tyre. There's no way knobblies are going back on there without snagging the tyre. Just look at the set up on the original photo for an example. Not saying this for shits and giggles, more for concern for your safety!

There's a really good cantis set up guide in an old MBA mag from around '91 or so.

Let me know if you want a scan - if you set those brakes up yourself I would politely suggest you could do with reading it...!

As suggested by Pete and Melv - put the XT back on!

Also, if those chainrings are GoldTec and 110 BCD (hard to tell from pics, but I don't think they are) then I would be keen to acquire them off you...
