1992 Orange Aluminium Elite help

Most bike parts will fit.

Seatpost is a size you'll need to find. Might be stamped on your current one or measure it with callipers or look for build threads.
My same year Alu-O was 27.6 but that means nothing ;)

Don't look at other years, they varied (and in fact might not be Elites but E2 E3 etc.. ;) )

Headset will be 1 1/4" aka Evolution this will be harder to get hold of, especially if you try to go ahead.
Stem and fork steerer size also need to be that.
The alternative is to get some reducer cups and put it to the common 1 1/8" setup.

Chainset's and bottom bracket have a relaition ship. They need to be the same interface (square taper if staying to 1992) but the length of the bottom bracket will be determined by your chainset use.
If in year 1992 then
Shimano XTR (M900) used a 107mm length bottom bracket
Shimano Deore XT (M735) and the other Shiamno's used a 122.5 mm bottom bracket

Shifter's need to be for your number of cogs at the back, most are interchangeable. Note RapidFires/RF+ from that era where quite poor, hence the move to GripShift being well and truly established (and the boom of SRAM)

The gallery and Archive (big link next to title) has a lot of information in it, like the Shimano catalogues for the years and other components.

Search the site and do more asking like you just did :)

There are other useful sites that will crop up, like this one
http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Hersteller/index.html
and the often given links like
http://www.fa-technik.adfc.de/Herstelle ... en.html#92
Use google to search on the M-number
The M number is a model code M standing for Mountain
So in M9xx you generally have XTR components.
M90x/M01x being the 1992 to 1995 first XTR series, then M95x up to 2000-ish, then in to modern times with M96x followed by M97x and some newer one that is just out.

Fantastic stuff, genuinely really helpful responses so thank you all who have taken the time to educate the newbie.

I should probably add at this stage that my aim is not necessarily to build the bike as it was when bought - it's more about making it the best bike to ride that I can do - if that means using a mix of retro and modern components then I'm happy with that.

The bike is this one:

so if anyone wants to recommend what they personally might upgrade that would be brilliant.

Thanks again all.

To be honest other than checking and maybe a service of the forks, it all looks very good and I would personally ride as is.

Possibly some new fresh brake blocks and cables, depens how old htey are.

Front mech does not 'match' but it's a good one (top end suntour) though if you do switch I know a man who might want it, not me.

Other than that it's all good.

Upgrade if you want, but buying second hand means it may not be better and more worn ;)

My personal change would be brakes and levers, but that just because I don't personally like them much.

For future reference chap

anything pace...member justbackdated is the man to speak to being an ex pace chap and bloody good at a fair price particulary with forks and servicing/rebuilds

Check out my Elite build thread for the stats because boy"O"boy posted them up. Think the seatpost's 30.6, it's defo not 27.2.

Groupset wise I'd go for M900 XTR, M732/5 XT or any of the DX. :D

seatpost is 31.6. I have one (black Kalloy and a 34.9 Fr and Rr mechs DX) for sale pm me if interested.

Good choice of Orange by the way, vastly underated IMHO and good luck hanging on to your savings from here on in :D

Thanks so much for all advice so far everyone. Problem is, the more time I spend looking at stuff on here, the more I can see imminent financial hardship heading my way.

Brock - is your xt front mech still for sale? I'll take that for starters if that's OK - Current rear mech is xt, but front is suntour so I'd like to match them up.

Cheers

Sorry dude, the mech I have won't fit the Elite. Might be interested in your Suntour one for my new Elite build if you're selling though

Agree with Fluffy on your bike, looks good as it is. Justbackdated serviced my forks and they came back like new. :D
