Got this from LGF a number of months ago for use as a commuter. I love the bike so big thanks to you sir. Its had plenty of use but I still think I got the bike for a bargain price of £75. Its also a 20" and i usually ride 19s but it fits well. Came with a seized stem, hubs and headset in need of some grease, a new seatpost needed along with some tyres, a couple of cables and a chain and cassette. Didnt take me long to sort these bits and pieces out.

I figured that the stem wedge had seized inside the fork steerer so i flipped the bike upside down after loosening off the stem bolt. Front wheel off and dropped a bit of threaded rod up the inside of the steerer to use as a drift. A few good skelps and it was moving no problem. Greased the headset once i had the stem out and i was well on my way. Needed a new cassette as the bottom cog was well worn. Picked one up from Halfords along with a new chain. £7 for a 7 speed cassette! Couldnt believe it, was well chuffed.

Scoured for a nice seatpost before coming across the Wheeler one on ebay in Germany. Thought the luminous green decal would work well with the green on the Kona decals and I'm pretty sure it does.

New tyres by the way of some Schwalbe Black Jacks as the slicks that were on it, although fast had seen better days. Sorted out the cables and off i went. The gears all work well but my only gripe is the brakes. Its all Exage 500LX thats on it and the brakes are crap. Will replace them at some point but that means replacing the levers as well and theyre STi. Am in no great hurry though. I broke my arm a while ago and as such had been confined to canal paths and tarmac so this bike was perfect for that, fast as fook! Wont ever sell it! Hope you like it.

Cheers bud. Cheapest bike i own and its been the one i've used most as of late. New baby is restricting my riding a bit as was the broken arm but its just so convenient to blast down the canal on it to get some miles in.

Very nice. Love early 90's Kona's. I had an almost NOS Lava Dome in black as my first Retro bike. Wish I hadn't sold it :(

Nice. Real world affordable bike getting muddy. That's what it's all about.
Re the poor brakes. That front straddle wire looks quite high to me. I'm no expert on cantis and struggle with the darned things so may be talking cr@p. But might be worth checking set up. Those more knowledgeable might chip in - without the help from this forum my own old Kona would not be stopping either.

Lovely bike.....but then I'm biased. Can't wait to get mine dirty - rode it for the first time the other day on the way to work as a bit of a shakedown - first ride since the rebuild.

As for the brakes - first thing I upgraded were the brakes on my '91 Bear Valley as they were 500lx and as you say were a bit crap. I'm running the slightly newer m560 lx brakes on my lava dome which are great.

Lovely bike bud.....enjoy.

Well following on from my not so nice experience out and about the other day with my brakes, new ones have been purchased. Winging there way to me is a set of LX M565(?) black cantis along with some XT sti and a Deore DX rear mech. The mech is just because i want it as opposed to need it. Always like the look of DX stuff but never had any fitted.
