How did he possibly think those bars were going to benefit his ride?

Got him a lot of press coverage to

before I knew who Tomac was, I had experimented with drops on MTBs.

Lots of hand positions for all day riding and good for fast bits - heck, they are good for going up AND down.

Tomac only did 2 races on the Raleigh Signature ti/carbon before reverting back to normal flat bars. Although he'd spent some time riding both yeti C26 & yeti Fro with drop bars prior to Raleigh. Hes since said in later interviews that the drop bars were totally sketchy on the descents. The original idea was to give a similiar riding position to his 7-11 team road bike.
