1991 Cinder Cone in original olive green

Anthony

Retrobike Rider
A lot of people seem to like this olive green colour, hugely nicer than the mud colour shown in the catalogue (which may have never made it into production). Owned from new, fairly original.

Nice honest bike, but it's bigger than 16"

I'd go for it if I didn't already have two Konas (Explosif & Lavadome)

Ok, thanks for clearing that one up, Anthony. That means I have two Konas from different years....(straddling different sizing philosophies) both of which are 16" with completely different dimensions.

I always thought my Explosif was an 18" measured c-top of seat tube. It's a lot bigger than my later (can't remember the year, orange-ish) Lava Dome, which IS 16" c-top of seat tube.

I don't know why they messed about like that. I agree the eBay bike looks like a 17, partly of course because it has a 11cm head tube, and the later 17s and 18s had 11cm head tubes. They made the head tubes 2cm shorter from 93 on, so your 96 Dome should have a 9cm head tube, as below.

The important thing though is the top tube of course, and I believe that the 91 size 16 on eBay should have a c-c tt of 53.5cm, more or less the same as your 96 (53.8, doesn't make any odds).

It's typical that the eBay seller knows that his bike is a 16 because he bought it new and he knows what he ordered. Most sellers of those bikes who bought them secondhand think they're size 17 because that's what they measure, but Kona didn't make a size 17 in 1991.

You could always show us a picture of your Explosif, if you wanted to brighten up a rainy old day.

Will post a pic when I work out how to do it....can I transport from "My Pictures" ?

And yes, that Lava Dome looks just like mine. Curve brakes and Gripshift on mine. Got a pair of XT thumbies that I might put on it though.
