1990 Ritchey Ultra

I have always been a bit of a night owl and now that I work from home and no longer have a commute, I find myself often online at 2am, thinking I should go to bed :D anyway, a couple of weeks ago, at around 2am, I was idly putting some searches on eBay for my 'Holy Grail' bikes, not really expecting to see anything, when up popped a Ritchey Ultra, not only was it in the UK, but it was also my size, it also wasn't insanely priced.

After making sure, as far as I could tell, that it was a real one, I clicked buy it now. (seller's photo)

It looked in great condition and the seller contacted me to offer to deliver it himself, which was awesome. Turned out he was only selling it as it was too small for him. (Sometimes there are benefits to being a short-arse!!😄)

It was clear that it had been reasonably well looked after and it was still set up nicely - brakes tuned, gear shifting great.

Most bikes I get are in really poor condition or at the least need some kind of restoration, so this one, which didn't really need much made, a nice change. I also meant that rather than fixing or sourcing parts or stripping it, I could immediately take it for a ride....so I did.

Nice to see someone had greased the seat tube - no stuck seat post 👍

As most will know, Ritchey Ultras usually came in white or black, but in 1990's they advertised an a' la carte option, where you could have one custom painted in the Imron colour of your choice. The colours on this match Imron Purple and Yellow - so I guess it might have been one of these custom models.

Whilst I am not the biggest fan of yellow ( or filthy, disgusting, bananas 🤮 but that's another story) I love purple bikes and have to restrain myself from choosing purple every time I respray a frame.

I suspect this is original because it still has the original shop decals

The Elephant's Perch Outdoor shop still exists in Idaho.

Naturally I am going to keep the original colours and decals. I used Meguiars Ultimate Compound Paint restorer on the frame to bring back the original shine and colour.

I should say I am assuming it is a 1990, it could be an 1989,, but the serial puts it in-between two other 1990 Ritchey Ultra on the Ritchey Project. It has a strange mix of parts - brakes and shifters are XT M73* as is the front derailleur. The Rear derailleur is Shimano DX and the Hubs, rear M732 and the front Shimano 600... Rims are Ritchey Vantage Expert

Whilst I could have kept it as it was, I wanted to change a few things to make the frame sing a bit more. `first thing I did was swap out the DX RD for and XT one so we have a matching component group. I swapped the silver Cantis for black ones as well as as swapping out the XT M730 Cranks for black ones - that I have restored, and have been saving for the right frame (Actually I was just too lazy to put them on my 1990 Team Avalanche)

I had thought I would swap out the Softride stem immediately, but it actually grew on me after a couple of rides!

I did have a Black Salsa stem from the same period that I thought I would try tough.

I swapped out the supermarket tyres for something a little more modern - as I will ride this one (as I do all my bikes!)

The saddle is a Terry (and I actually think it is a women's saddle) it was pretty worn and faded, but not ripped, but it is so comfortable!!! (I don't know what that says about my arse 😄 ) Anyway, pretty sure it was original, so I restored it, and it stays for now.

The only 'new' item was a black Ritchey 26.8mm seat post, until I can find a period correct one. But my OCD struggles with silver seat posts and black stems 🤪

The wheels are in great condition, the front had a little bit of wobble, which was easily fixed in the truing stand. The Ritchey Vantage wheel decals are faded and worn, so, I am tempted to replace them with the Yellow and Purple ones.

There's just a few more things to restore fully, the wheels as I mentioned, but these roll really nicely atm., The XT pedals I will restore and I am looking for paint matches for the Imron colours. (Imron was bought by Dupont in the 90's and then divested in to a company called Axalta Coating Systems 🤷‍♀️, I will email them at some point) There are a few chips here and there and a little chain suck, but nothing major. (I mentioned my my OCD earlier 😄 )

Hopefully you think that the changes I have made have breathed new life into this bike - either way, it is lovely to ride. Comfortable and responsive - and I absolutely love it.

Wowsers lady-bum-Phill, another gorgeous machine added to the shed! Nice work so far (as ever!).

Look forward to your OCD take the better of you as you slowly work your way through the tweaks/changes you mentioned above. 💪 😍

Lovely bike. Nice to see different colour scheme on an Ultra

XT seatpost would suit build nicely @PhillB as it's nicely understated and not to blingy with CNC'd clamps etc.

Have you now got a forearm like Popeye after cleaning that paint up?!* 💪 🥵👏

Good shout and it would!! but they are silly prices even for old battered ones!! I also haven't seen many in 26.8mm - but I'll keep an eye out.

Naturally I balance the polishing between each arm to ensure symmetrical muscle development 🤪

However, I have just bought another frame with Popeye forks.....
