1990 Kona Explosif - any interest and roughly how much?

OffToNewZealand

Retro Newbie
Hi all

I am about to get rid of my Kona Explosif (1990 splatter paint blue and pink on black, Track 2 forks).

Had this bike since new, makes me feel old, and am finally parting company as I am emigrating to New Zealand.

She is in pretty good nick and a few deviations from original...

Put 42 and 52 front rings on it as i like my big gears.

Rear rim replaced to a Mavic MA40.

XPress thumbshifters replaced to thumb levers (under warranty in first year of ownership)

XC Pro pedals replaced with SPD's - orig pedals leant to a friend and never seen again....

18" Frame.

Currently running on slicks and used as a city bike. Spent many years in a friends garage unused whilst i moved all over the country.

Rear quick release replaced with security allen key. Seat QR replaced.

Stem and handlebar replaced to have higher, lost previous velocity stem (think bike shop kept it).

All round good nick, but 18 years old... so not showroom condition.

Bike is in London, i am away this weekend, but will try and get some pics up in the next few days.

Any interest and any guide prices would be welcomed. Probably stick on ebay in next week.

See here for some discussion on what is presumably almost the same bike as yours, except yours has Track 2s
http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26647

Saw a discussion on mtbr t'other day in which some very wise mtbr expert was pointing out how dangerous Track 2s were, owing to a catastrophic design error which lead to the crowns snapping and how Kona tried to withdraw them all from the market. On the other hand, yours has lasted 18 years so far.... Go figure, mtbr expert.

I wonder what Hilts thinks it would be worth, but FWIW I'd guess something around 250 as yours is fairly original - but Explosif prices are very erratic it seems to me, and not sure I like the sound of what you say about the stem and handlebar, value-wise.

You can't use this site for a quasi-auction, only for set-price sales (in For Sale section), or maybe initially post up some pretty pictures of it in the Readers Bikes section, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of comments that'll make it all a lot clearer.

cheers for the info. Track 2s were a weird on, Joe Murray in all his design prowess...

Will get some pics up and then link it to an auction on ebay. Bottom line is it has to go regardless.

Kona Explosif 1990 going to ebay

Hi all

please see the pics of the explosif after 18 years with me. Not as great nick as i thought, but still all works and going well.

Will post on ebay and let it go to the highest bidder, i leave for NZ in a month... Gotta go!

Afraid bike will be pick up from Ealing in London, can ship if buyer arranges.

Seat is very tired and can be seen in pics... too much wet weather riding many moons ago...

Better pics available on request, but each one is 5MB roughly

Cheers

Brian

Ah, tis a thing of beauty! I suggest you throw some knobbies on it if you want to really charm people, wish I could think of any possible way I could buy this! i have sent a friend who might be interested a link to this thread.

Excellent idea. I like auctions better than trying to guess what somebody wants. The value of bikes like this is determined by what people are willing to pay.

Will get an auction together, just sold my racer thru ebay and the buyer has not been in contact since.... Great stuff!

As for the bars the stem and the wheels, they aint no good to me if i am off to NZ...

Thanks for the interest and advice
