Finally managed to add a 1990 Cindercone to my Kona collection after a long hunt. This one popped up on my search on ebay and although it looks scruffy it should clean up really nicely and as a bonus all the decals are in great shape.
Parts wise i still had the wheels of a 93 Kilauea and for the tyres i've had these blackwall Maximum and Reaction tyres tucked away for a while so they're going on. The drivetrain and brakes are a mix of Deore XT, Deore DX and Deore LX with SS5 levers. The stem i bought years ago for a build like this and is a 90 velocity which has been powder coated. Bars are GT's and are a nice width with just being over 600mm. Saddle is a Avocet Racing, headset is a 1 inch Deore DX and the pedals are my favourite Tioga Surefoots.
All in all it should build up into a cracking bike and can't wait to get it out on the tracks.

Gave it a quick clean today with the beginners cleaning kit consisting of GT85 some Jif and a pad and it's starting to look better. Going to use some fuel injector cleaner though from work to get the glue off the forks and where the chainstay protector has come away. Also gonna save that protector because it cleaned up lovely just needs glueing back down again where its lifted.
Overall the frame and forks are in great condition with no dents just some minor rust areas which can be cleaned and repainted (got some tamiya white paint in the post) Next step lots of polishing to get the shine back which the cream cleaner can dull a bit.

More progress with the Cindercone yesterday and tonight. Cleaned all the frame and polished it and it's come up really well, need the sun out to show it off better though. Fitted the DX headset but it's quite obvious there's to much powder coat on the stem lol so that will have to be sanded back to get it to fit. Saddle and seatpost fitted and and got the tyres and wheels on and took the spoke protector off coz it was minging and looks naff.

I love the variations on the splatters. This one is a very delicate looking fleck/flick finish, and looks much better than some of the more hap-hazard splodges you sometimes see 🤣

It's what i've always loved about the splatter Konas ever since i first seen one in Denton Cycles back in 89,theres never two the same.
I call the hap hazard splatted ones the Friday bikes, when they were wanting to get home, splat splat splat that'll do,hometime.😂

Nearly there just waiting on a chain and some white Tamiya paint to turn up.
Finally decided on the parts, i swapped the XT rear mech for a DX i wasn't keen on the mish mash of mechs didn't look good. Once i was sure everything was ok i cabled it up,no going back now lol
There's still quite a bit to do like setting everything up and touching the areas up which need it with the paint but seeing it looking like a bike i just can't wait to take it on its first spin 😁
Saying its younger relative was close by i thought i'd take a photo of the two of them together. These two are in my top 3 of Konas i've rode but what's the third you ask, well the photo is below of it.

That Explosif is a work of art Spanky - lovely bike. Cindercone looks great too. I have never owned a Kona but they were always on my list when looking for a new bike.
