1990 Al Carter Timber Trail

Picked this for free on Gumtree a couple of weeks back. Close to where a work, so why not.

Although rusty, the usual suspects were free moving or moved with a little extra leverage. But in the process of removal, I destroyed the original front skewer and seat quick release.

Luckily had a couple of identical Shimano wheel skewers to replace the front skewer and very rusty rear one.

Both the last free bike, and this one came with those weird ergo type butterfly bars (anyone want a pair?)

The front tire side walls are shot, but the weave is still holding strong.

I had a spare Kalloy stem (and so got to reuse the cable hanger that also was fitted to the bike), and no name alloy handlebars, along with replacing the seat with a more suitable saddle, as that was a massive unoriginal padded thing. I was watching a set of period correct STI brakes/shifters, but they were at the high end of what I wanted to pay and then they sold, so have fitted a set of 1994 STX rapidfires for the moment. So far not cost me anything.



Just gotta cable up the gears, and fit some grips and it's finished for the time being.

Love these, two of my pals brought identical timbertrails when they came out, one got seriously upgraded until the frame was swapped out to a Scott Pro evolution, many happy memories

Now fully cabled, and found some green Profile grips I'd forgotten about.

From the brief blast up and down the road, it rides proper retro.

Always good to remove butterfly bars from some poor bike that deserved better.

This has reminded me that I had one of these come through my workshop way back in August 2014!
It all looked to be more or less original spec and I've found a few photos I took of at the time.

EDIT: Now realise that I already posted these photos on the forum back then.
But here they are again 11 years later.
