1989 Saracen UU Trekker

Re:

Story so far: Acquired bike at a bargain price from top RBer Coomber on here. We met in a rainy Haldon car park. As it arrived:

I rode it round the blue trail in the rain. Was immediately smitten, but it obviously needs a bit of love. Some chain slip under load, brakes are not brilliant, BB is loose, pedals rough/dry.

Plan is to keep it in one piece - i.e. service and overhaul rather than a strip and rebuild. I have too many boxes of bits. A complete, rideable bike is better...

At home:

Chain's had it.

And I'll need to find some new caps for these before I think about a rebuild... I wonder if a crank cap would fit?

Cranks came off alright. But the BB is another story. Lockring off but adjustable cup stuck fast. Broke my favourite punch trying to tap it free. Time to finally pony up and buy the proper tool. Park HCW-4 here I come...

8) looks great, hopefully you can get the bb out without too much trouble.

Re:

Tool arrived, bottom bracket out now. It was pretty well stuck, and horribly rusty inside. Even the plastic sleeve had apparently fused to the BB shell, I had a job getting it out without destroying it. Fixed cup wouldn't (easily) budge either, and as I don't have a proper vice here yet I had to resort to whacking the HCW-4 with a largeish hammer. I'm happy to report that it stood up to this abuse without breaking a sweat. Brilliant tool, wish I'd bought one years ago.

It's easier to make out how grotty these bits are in the pic below. Everything would be dry as a bone if it hadn't just been sprayed with lube in an attempt to free it...

BB shell isn't much better:

Quickly cleaned up the BB. Look at the crap left behind.

It's knackered.

Chased BB threads

Much better!

New BB went in easy with a generous coating of anti-seize grease...once I'd worked out I had to back off the screw holding the cable guide in place...I had a sealed FSA one already stashed for another build...so much for originality...this is going to be ridden!

Re:

As a tool fetishist with a bit of a problem with early Saracens, this is right up my street!

Wera jeweller's screwdriver, Bahco shifter, and wait, are those Lindstrom pliers? Can't quite make them out...

Looking forward to the next installment!

Re:

Cleaned up the chainset (couldn't resist) and refitted it. Used allen key crank bolts which look neater, although it would be nice to find some proper crank caps. I have some somewhere... Found some suitably patinated no-name platform pedals with smooth bearings in my parts bin and fitted them, too. They'll certainly do for now, actually quite happy with the look.

Quick lube and clean of gear mechs (and cables/shifters) fitted a brand new KMC Z8 chain and a nearly new Shimano HG41 cassette. I thought about reusing the old one but as the chain was skipping on a test run I decided to save any further F-ing about. Adjusted the gears in the stand but still need to take it for a test ride.

Re:

Hey mate nice to see this

I had the BB out about 4 years ago and greased it back so surprised it's so bad. Did ride it all weather though.

Looks great so far. Keep up the good work
