1989 Rockhopper Comp

Bought this for a tenner last week, hopefully collecting this Saturday.

Depending on the condition I might have a stab at getting this back to original spec. As far as I can tell it's only missing it's rear wheel plus seat & seatpost.

This was the top of the range Rockhopper in 88/89 with full Deore groupset. My first bike was a yellow basic Rockhopper from the same year with Exage Montain spec.

I have a set of DX hubs/mavic 231s which can go on it straight away but I will need to source a seat & post. keen not to spend a fortune on it but with any luck it should clean up nice.

I'll follow up with progress pics

think we were all looking at that auction.

DeNucci Green. Lovely. 1988. Same colour as the 1987 Stumpy. Lovely.

Nice Rocky

Yes, I agree, I think everybody was watching that one. I was only watching though.
A great buy and it stays in the retrobike community.
My 88 Stumpy has a 26.4 seatpost. Will try to check my info but would imagine its the same.
Get back you.

OK, collected the bike yesterday. Now, I love the colour & classic 89 geometry but sadly the condition of the paintwork is pretty poor. Peppered with chips & scrapes. It's odd as there doesn't seem to be any wear on the original rings & brake blocks.

Anywhere, it's all there, I've cleaned it best I can with new cables & grease. I put a spare pair of DX/231CD & all it needs is a seatpost.

I might get some mudguards for it plus a rack & make it a work/utility bike. If it were a Stumpjumper it might just be worth a full resto effort with paint, decals the works but sadly this poor bike is just bellow border line.

What do you all think?

I assume that's a wrong-sized post just balanced in there for the photo? Or are you actually 14ft tall? ;-)

I like the bike a lot. Splendidly original.

Same as this?..... apologies for the thread hijack, a friend has posted me a pic of his stumpjumper ( I've been pestering him for long enough! ).... any idea of vintage?
