1989 Roadace

dwscrimshaw

Retro Guru
Having started with just a frame I rode this as a retro bike for about a year. I have now got hold of the original 600 Group set and put this back to std, as best I can.

Will add 600 series dual pivot brakes, seal bearing head set and threadless BB, along with lighter saddle and pedals for use on road. (BB threads are stripped so can't use std BB anyway)

very nice, but the 1st 531 decal you had on is the correct one for this bike. I'd also keep the callipers as are. They are the ones that came on that bike.

Thanks for the comments Its difficult to confirm exactly what decals were fitted as they get replaced over the years. My reason for changing it is the difference between the decals shown in the Raleigh catalogs for the two years. this is also backed up by the fact that Reynolds themselves only keep decals back to 1989 then the earlier ones are supplied by H Lloyds. I have seen one of two pictures on line of the 89 model with the latter decal so reluctantly I think this is the correct one although I prefer the look of the older type. Note the Select 600 decals move too between the years.

Maybe my view of single pivot brakes go back to some poor ones I had in my youth. Having returned to riding relatively recently I am very impressed with the stopping ability of the duel pivots. The ones I intend to use are also tri-color ones in the same grey color so i am hoping will not too out of place. As I have both I may give the singles a try some time, but as its my main road bike I want to be confident about stopping on it with other more modern bikes around.

That said its all sounds a bit daft quibbling about the decals when other items are non-std. My intention was to have a bike I could ride regularly, but have all the std parts should I wan them. I'll see how I get on with it once riding it again.

Thanks for the comments.
