1988 - Specialized Rockhopper

Retro Newbie
First post, and already looking for advice! :D

I have had a 88 Rockhopper (Blue) since the early 90's which has had very little attention and relatively low use during this period.
I've noticed some play in the bottom bracket and want to replace it.
I'm pretty sure its a square taper.
Can anyone advise an adequate replacement or do i need to remove said BB to find the spec of it.
I've got a crank puller to remove the crank, but am i right in thinking i'll need a "toothed socket" to unscrew the BB?
It's all a bit of a rush as i'm off to Scotland next friday!
I'm also looking to replace the chain and probably chainset/cassette (although i'd rather keep the original biopace). Is it worth just trying new chain first? (I'm aware that all three wear together and there can be problems with slippage)

Thanks for any help

Mark

You should be able to replace your BB with a UN series sealed unit from Shimano, what you will need will be the BB shell width (being a Spec it will probably be 68mm) and the width of the spindle or the model of cranks that you intend to run. you can then go on to CRC and just order a replacement (plus tool) and bolt it in. I would think a Rockhopper of that age will be running Exage mountain (M400) and I think the BB width will be about 113mm.

Re:

Yes its all exage mountain stuff.
After i stripped out the bottom bracket, cleaned and regreased (and forgot to measure the spindle (oops)), it needed an old style tool to remove one side. So its gone to the local bike shop for them to fit me a replacement.
