I've upgraded the wheels on my Raleigh Ozark so the old wheels are for sale. With wide Weinmann alloy rims in anodized dark grey and Maillard alloy hubs (screw-on freewheel - could be modded for single speed use if you re-dish the rear) these are distinctly retro. Solid axles (not quick release) so great for an anti-thief commuter or pub bike. They're tight and true and although not light by modern standards they have proved to be very strong.

£30 takes the set. I'm in North London and would prefer collection.

Picture below is quite old but the wheels haven't aged visibly. Pie dish is no longer with us though :(

Wheelz

Hi
I think these might be just what I'm after.
I'll say yes please, now, as long as the profile is I'm hoping for.
Could you possibly send me a close-up?

I'm after the wide, totally smooth rim, from about that date, with no ridge or convex moulding.

The ones I'm trying to match were made by Alesa, in Belgium.

All the best
Chris

Here's a couple of close-ups. The profile is gently curved - could be described as slightly convex, but certainly it's wide and smooth.

Hmmm, got quite excited when I saw this as only last month the freehub broke on my 1987 raleigh avanti and lbs say new stuff isn't compatible so needs whole new wheel. Only alternative, they say is to get another one and swap out the internals - but they said I'd be very lucky to find the exact one. But its a shimano 105 hub and yours is maillard. Also I don't think mine's a screw on freewheel, so quite different. But now I'm thinking I could just swap the whole wheelset. Is it 6 speed? I'm in Brighton but my aunt's in hackney and my wife works in hammersmith - either anywhere near you?

Hackney's pretty near. Yes it has a six speed freewheel on it although I was thinking about keeping that :) PM me if you're interested - sure we can do a deal.

Quite jealous...I'd like an Avanti!

Of course, that would be separate, sorry I'm pretty new to this stuff. The avanti's got almost black rims (there are some pics in the link below). Yours look lighter in the photos...?

Do you know how the maillard hubs compare? I guess I'm interested because its the right year and pretty similar, but ultimately its a different wheelset. Screw on freewheel is lower spec but probably better today in terms of replacement if it goes - I think it will allow me to keep those super tough weinmanns all the time I can get a replacement. Does that sound right?

Sorry for all the questions! Just need to consider whether this will be the right solution to the problem or whether to hold out for an old 105 hub. The bike's on the road in meantime on a dodgy old back wheel so I'm in no hurry. PM on way.

Hello mate, not to rule it out completely but I've come across some other 80s weinmann wheels on here already which makes me think that it won't be that hard to get something similar and I'm not too bothered about them matching so a back wheel only will be cheaper. Also I have some other priorities at the moment so I can leave this for another time. I'd be interested in your reply but don't want to raise your hopes too much, sorry. If it had been the exact ones I'd have had them!

They are dark grey rather than black. 105 are quality road spec parts. They will probably be lighter than the Maillards but less tough and certainly less servicable. Up to you at the end of the day!
