1986 Rocky Mountain Tantalus

Very nice bicycle, that handlebar and brake lever gives more caracter.

The wheelset varies a little bit off the catalogue spec, but I laced up a pair I think are pretty sharp and should suit the build.

The hubs I believe are old black Bullseye hubs, I had to get a bit crafty swapping and altering the rear axle as they came from a road bike and I needed 130mm spacing. After that was taken care of and they were respaced I laced the hubs 3x front & rear to Saturae X26 rims 36h with slv. spokes and blk. brass nipples.

Glad the rims sport nice old Wheeltech decals to feel properly at home on a Rocky build.

A pair of NOS Wolber Chamonix 26x1.95 are going to be the initial rubber I’ll get out there rolling around on…

Threw chainrings onto the polished Specialized Flag cranks, opted for these to offset the polish/alloy ring contrast the originals would have presented… and I think this light bronze ano will compliment the final build.
To be fitted with a nice clean pair of XC2’s.

Not a lot new to report, here’s a little teaser snap I got of the frame being prepped and receiving a rust treatment.

Can you tell more on the rust treatment. Is it an internal process or on
the outside of the frame. Why does it look so shiny in the picture?

I’m not entirely certain what the process involved was… the frame had sat bare for a bit as it went back for a second round of repairs… so it needed a good clean up, I think after some sanding etc it was a treatment applied to the outer of the frame where the paint is headed to make certain no contaminants were left hanging around.
I believe in the photo it’s so shiny as it was just applied, I’ll attach the only other photo I got.
For internal corrosion I can only think of the JP Weigle frame saver, but I think that’s more preventative and helps corrosion from spreading rather then battling it… I’ll be spraying some into my frame before building for sure…

As every bike I seem to find that appeals to me ends up being blue in colour… I generally lean to other colours if the choice were mine…

Since I’m committed to a repaint here the choice for colour was the other listed colour in the 1986 spec. I initially being the “medium rich blue metallic” I have opted for “light moss green metallic”
