(edit: previous sale was not completed, so it's now available again)

I'm busy designing and building my new prototype and need some funding, so I've decided to sell my original Cleland Aventura.

It's currently rideable as it is, and would benefit from a service, or even a complete overhaul.

It will probably need a new bottom bracket bearing, although the one fitted seems to be OK.

The brake shoes will need re-lining. I'm sure I have a spare re-lined set somewhere, but have not found them yet.

It would come with a decal/sticker set and a pair of brand new Hakkapeliittas with ice spikes, plus spare spikes with a fitting/removal tool.

Because of its rarity, I'm setting the price at £1000.

Ideally, I'd like cash on collection, I could deliver it for an additional cost.

Historically this bicycle represents the Genesis of all terrain bicycle manufacture in the UK and Europe.
In 1982 Britain you had only three options if you wanted a purpose designed fat tyred off-road bicycle:

*Go to America and bring back a mountain bike
*make your own mountain bike copy
*or buy this British made and designed bike

I first rode alongside this bike many times over the years dating as back to 1984 when I started riding off-road. It brings back many fond memories.

Bicycle engineering has eventually caught up with this bike's engineering so it is relatively easy to get hold of modern parts that will fit. I.e. 650b rims and tyres, two speed wide ratio chainsets and wide bottom bracket cartridges that will fit its 90mm wide BB shell. Making this a very usable and practical bike. If you know where to look you can still get hold of the shoes for its moped hub brakes and even unused replacement hubs. Each pair of brake shoes will last for 20 years of regular use. These brakes give more reliable powerful braking than contemporary cantilevers or the later Sturmey Archer hub brakes. And I have never known them to overheat because the entire outer hub functions as the cooling surface.

31 years later and this, the first purpose designed all-terrain bicycle sold in Europe, should be an unpractical and unusable museum piece. But thanks to the long and thoughtful process and six prototypes that led up to its creation, this is a remarkably well developed design. Even by today's standards, this is a remarkably comfortable and practical bike.

It deserves to go to a good home.

Re: 1982 Cleland Aventura SOLD!

That was quick!

I am sure it is going to a good home, as only a good home would appreciate what this bike is.
Will the new owner say hello?

Sounds very interesting. Have you got any more details or is it being kept under wraps?

Re: 1982 Cleland Aventura SOLD!

No, it's not under wraps, it's simply that there's not a lot to show at the moment.

The main reason is to make a prototype that can be replicated.

The timeline of the familiar Cleland website (www.clelandcycles.wordpress.com) is stopped at this phase of the Cleland history.

However, I'm posting pictures of the components I'm working on to the associated Flickr Photostream.

You can access this by clicking the sidebar on the website.

I'm designing and making a special pedals, crankset and chain tensioner.

The frame is in a state of flux right now.

So, that's where to find the latest news on the latest Aventura developments.
