1981 MountainBikes by Ritchey

8) is it just me or is that a great price? lovely looking bike.

price is for the frame. and its not the one in the pic either.

reads a bit fishy to me.

I suspect the frames really are what the seller claims, but the price seems high given that the paint (and decals?) is not original.

I'm sure the frames are legit.
But it's not clear if they were painted BITD or if they've just been stored, awaiting paint.

I guess if these remaining frames were not all 23 x 23 (and with such slack seat angles, going by the photo), they would have sold years ago.

And original forks would help. There's no real detail about the replacement fork that they use.

Soooooo, exactly how much money did that bike shop owner loan Tom Ritchey such that he got 110 fillet brazed frames in return?

Christ, that's a lot for frame only.

I'd think nearer the $600 mark would be a little more fair, if in original paint then possibly on a good day if you had one. Not if you own up to have 117 of them!

I emailed the seller. Apparently the unpainted, bare frames have been stored inside (in dry-ish California) for nearly thirty years. There is mild surface rust but they refinish at D&D which is a high quality paint shop. I would imagine they sand/glass bead blast them to strip the rust, but the seller didn't confirm that.

The bike in the picture is his.

That paint/decal jobs wouldn't be cheap but I think they (the frames) are a little pricey. Pretty cool though! If they weren't so huge I'd be inclined to think it over.... and then decide they were a little too pricey :)

I should probably read the ad a bit better...or even read it period
