1979 Jack Taylor Touring Tandem

here is the full rundown to support the entry in rBOTM. A 1979 Jack Taylor touring tandem in 100% original condition set up like a classic French Randonneur. Beautiful filet brazing and box pin striped paint. TA Cyclotouriste tandem chainset with Phil disc brakes and hubs. The bike has some wear and spots on the Phil hubs but still remarkable condition. Nice details include the serial number matching front and rear racks.

Really intricate set up with the cables and wiring for the lighting. It is amazing to me how much more complex a tandem is than a single.

TA Cyclotouriste tandem crankset is a pretty rare item, other components include Campagnolo Rally rear mech, Suntour front, and of course Brooks saddles.

From Phil Wood's website:

"The brake operates a lot like an automobile clutch. A splined driver threads on to the hub. That in turn drives a splined friction disc. The body on the brake is a backing plate and a pressure plate. The cable actuating arms rotate cams that in turn cause four radially spaced lever arms to move the pressure plate against friction disc and backing plate."
"The disc floats on the splined driver. There are 4 adjusting screws that move the pressure plate closer to the disc to allow for friction disc wear. The brake assembly slides over the hub axle and is held in place by a rubber "O" ring that seats in the groove in the hub axle. A reaction arm contacts the frame and serves to function the same as the reaction arm on a coaster brake. The brake is somewhat tricky to adjust but once mastered it functions well. The friction disc was made from an asbestos material. Since the use of asbestos is no longer available the discs are no longer available. A suitable replacement material [has not] been found, and along with the high cost to manufacture, it has since been discontinued."



about the TA tandem chainset, they are more easily found at "home" on upper market machines
TA and Stronglight ( with the 49D cranks coupled with TA rings ) were THE amateur's choice

I have always been amused finding these TA parts on US soil , understandibly on the "randonneuse" and touring bicycles following a long historical predominance and know how

but also on the starting californian MTB's ( as well as Mafac cantis and duopar rear mechs )

This was at the time when french companies and products had still a little influence in the quality bicycle world :roll:
