1949 claud butler

That CB looks great.

Love the red anodised Airlites too - these were (and are) very sought after due to the Reg Harris connection mentioned in an earlier post but often the anodising fades to pink over time. Rare to look this good. The South of France bars look great too, and are very 'period', but perhaps not the most comfortable of designs.

For the record, if this is a 1949 model then it's the Avant Coureur. It was fillet brazed with bilaminations and ranks amongst the best frames that money could buy at that time. I have a later 1956 version.

The same 'Axe head' design bilaminations (not lugs), were used for the New Allrounder when that appeared at the Earls Court show in November 1950, hence the confusion about the model. The original Allrounder had a lugless frame.

The Avant Coureur bilams were changed to a spearpoint design at that time and the name changed to Avant Coureur Special, although they were later changed once again in 1952 or 53 to a short spearpoint design, which lasted until the demise of CB in 1956.

If your frame has one frame number under the bottom bracket, then it's pre 1950. If there are two numbers, then it's post 1950 and one number is the date the frame was made. EG: 527 would be the 7th month in 1952.
