1941 Raleigh

Hi, an old bloke who lives near me is selling a 1941 Raleigh he has had since new. Apparently he has changed lots of the bits on it as time has gone on but said it has sturmey archer hubs (gererator front) and isn't in bad condition for it's age. Said it is 531 tubing.

I am going to go and have a look at it and though it might make a nice project for the dark nights, but want to give the old guy a fair price. I have no idea about this era of bike so any input would be appreciated.

I know stricly this should be in the road bike how much thread - and if anyone objects I'll happily delete and move it there.

Condition is everything, Joe. A good one is worth quite a lot, especially as it's an early one. A rough one might be worth as little as £100.

Quite collectable, though. Americans love old Raleighs.

Cheers Chris, £100 upwards depending on condition sounds about right. I'll post a couple of pics up next week if I buy it

You sure its a 1941 model ?

I ask this because I believe Raleigh did not badge any of its bikes as Raleighs during the war years, only punting out basic Humbers, Rudges etc.
Most of their production was war work ie munitions etc.

Might have been from a stock of pre war bikes as yet unsold or the sellers memory is fogged and its post war. I would not have thought Raleigh would sell a bike made of decent steel during a national emergency, seems unpatriotic :?

if you go on retro raleighs there is a date system related to the serial number which is usually on left side top of seat lug.
It will be a letter prefix followed by numbers.
