1 x 9 (or 7 or 8 ), why?

Gears; uh huh, I understand why.

Singlespeed; yup, I get that too.

but 1 x 7, 8 or 9? Pointless, in my mind.

However, I am prepared to be enlightend, so explain please.

Your sincerely

Confused of Branston.

i was thinking the same yesterday.

singlespeed ethos. keep it simple.

gears, keep it practical.

if you are running gears then what possible disadvantage does a front mech carry?

i have a 1x8 setup (36t ring)
i dont really understand your question, i mean i can get my head round it :?
i use that setup becase i never used the granny ring and never went fast enough to use the big ring so got something in between, and saved on some clutter
isnt it just a lesser amount of gears?, just because the ohers werent being used.... :? :? :? ➡️ :?:

Well, the ideal system is all the gears you want.

And I suppose if you only want 7/8/9 gears, and what you get from a cassette/single ring is what you want, then it's fine.

I would stick with hub gears, if it were me. But you all know that. 8)

i've been running 1x9 gears for 10 years , it's just to let me have a good range using a 38t on the front :D

works for me :D :D :D

+1

Ditched the front mech fairly recently due to not using the granny and wanting to de-clutter and save some weight. Have done a few races 1x9 and have had no problem keeping up with (and passing) fully geared riders.

I'm pretty sold on it, only have one fully geared bike left in the stable

Been running 1 X 8 (38 with 11-28) on my '91 Trek 7000 slick tyred commuter for a few weeks. I like it. The granny had been removed years ago. Saved 300+ grams removing the big ring, front mech, shifter & cable & love the simplicity of an emptier seat tube & left 'bar.
Slightly undergeared on the downhills but encourages me to spin the DX 170mm cranks. Jumps between gears are ok. 40t with 11 - 32 9 speed might be ideal if you can get 40t middle rings & if a 40 would clear the chainstay. Think it has to be in the middle ring position for decent chainline.

I run 1 x 9 on my Soul primarily because the sort of riding where I live and what the bike is going to be used for I have no call for a granny or outer ring.

Simples.
