So far I have
9 speed Ultegra Cassette 12/23
9 speed Dura-Ace short cage mech
9 speed Dura-Ace (i think) chain
32T 3/32 Middleburn Uno ring (to replace the 1/8th)
sooooo.....
shifter options.
Ideally I think I would go for an M970 shifter pod....but hey, what a price!
Paul thumby conversions...yes
SJS equivalent...yes
Anything else?
Are top of the range Avid twistgrips horrible....would they work on the rest of the stuff.
Cheers
Carl

Actually, the other week I set up my nephew's Hoo Koo E Koo using an SRAM ESP 7.0, and I have to say I was rather converted to the idea of a twist grip. It's easy to use, totally intuitive and shares the advantage of simplicity with its thumbshifter cousin, but by way of a bonus it looks everso clean.
The SJS/Pauls shifter mounts are nice, but honestly for the price I'd expect them to be made of platinum.
If you can find a nicer finished one, I'd go for a twist grip.

I dont use anything other than gripshifts with flat bars.
Hate anything with an indexed front mech - gripshift has a continuous ratchet for the front mech. Thumbies are good, but limit lighting options unless you get a spacemount attachment thingy.
And like someone says, its effortless to change gear - no need to move thumbs, just rotate hand fore or aft. But theyre a bugger for fitting new cables. and you need special shaped brake levers.

Carl, why not take this opportunity to change your complete drivetrain to something a little less Shimanoy?

Al, I don't use a script you know,it's all my own work.

You want either Sram Rocket or Attack shifters for use with Shimano.
If you hunt around you can still find M970 XTR at reasonable prices, try Chainreaction or Merlins.

i have to sets of paul thumbies, one on top of the drops on my CX and one on my bilenky cargo - both 1X8 - and i really love it!
they are solidt and you can shift to friction mode if there are any problems!

do it!

I really don't have a problem with Shimano to be fair Al....brought good and efficient stuff to the masses...a bit like VW  Besides I have bought the stuff now.

Thanks for all your help chaps....I'll have a look again at options.
