1" ahead stem?

when you clamp up tight, grab the wheel between your legs and wrench the bars as hard as you can. Was always my test of quill stems :) See no reason why it wouldn't work the same.

I used a shim on the Pace for years with no problems whatsoever. Only changed when I managed to source a scarce 1" zooka which made the bike more 'pure' in my opinion. Had nothing to do with any safety issues or the like. Shims are fine an dandy and open a lot more (and cheaper often) options.

Also, as an aside, seat posts have been shimmed by many companies for donkeys and don't tend to fail due to the shim...

Have a 1" steerer and I have recently purchased a shim to allow a 1 1/8" stem to be fitted, however the stem cap that is currently on there actually fits inside the stem! This will be where the danger comes in!

I need to get a new stem cap before I would feel safe riding this. Am I right in assuming that both 1" and 1 1/8" stem caps use the sames size bolt?

What about Hope Head Doctors, do they fit both 1" and 1 1/8" steerers?

Thanks

I doubt you'd fit a hed doctor in a 1" Steerer, they are a tight fit on some (albeit thick walled aluminium) 1 1/8 steerers.

Yes, all you need is a stem cap.

Many of us probably have some kicking about, but they are far from expensive unless you want/need a Chris King or some other fancy custom job.
