1 1/8 threaded headset advice

Does anyone know which way up the top bearing cage goes in a ritchey logic 1 1/8 threaded headset? I’ve attached pictures, sorry for the silly question! It’s going on a 1992 marin eldridge grade. I’m actually now thinking I might like to replace this old headset though , with something new or at least in a bit nicer condition, any recommendations ? I see you can buy a new ritchey logic 1 1/8 threaded on Amazon. Is it a case of any 1 1/8 threaded headset will fit ok ? Cheers!

Can you show us pics of the headset cup and the top bit(I don’t know what that’s called) normally it goes it’s the cage facing upwards if it’s an oversized headset (eg xt m735 era) but normally in most cases the bearings face upwards🙂

Pic 1 I'd wager is the right way or the top race will be riding on the cage. Usually.

Ok thanks , that’s the way I guessed, feels ok that way up . Think I might be missing a washer between the two top nuts though.Anyone tried the cheap new ritchey logic headsets? Looks like they’ve got a horrible plastic bit on the top but I wouldn’t have any need for that part anyway. Or any other suitable headsets ? I’m not sure if I need to worry about the stack height when choosing one?

Ritchey headsets are quite low stack 35.9mm on the 1 1/8" version and 33mm the 1". I've used them a fair bit without problems. The new ones ( or the last new one i had) was very little different from the older ones....92 vs 15 ish in reality and no quality issues. Thats the new replacement for yours.

There is a tabbed lock washer between the nuts....without it it will keep wanting to come undone.

I might have a spare if you are missing it ......

These are on Amazon, look much worse than the one in your picture though. I’m not worried about a replacement being period correct just want something that fits and looks half decent, tange seiki falcon looks like an option if it fits ok stack height wise? I haven’t been able to find a new ritchey logic like the one in your picture. If you have a full one in half decent condition you wanted to get rid of I’d be interested 😄

Like i said, if your missing bits, ive probably got them.

Unless the races are worn or the headsets cosmetically challenged, why not keep it?

The bearing cages can be a pain as if they go in twwu in some instances the cage will bind. But, i always bin the cages and add more balls instead loose in grease.
