? 1 1/8 Size question ...

Hi guys, bit of advice on sizes please, think I know but not 100% so just need some confirmation..

I am just awaiting the delivery of the IBIS from Jez, As far as I know its a 1 1/8 steerer.. I want to put a CK 1 1/8 Threadless Headset in, so that I dont have to use headset spanners etc .. but I have been offered a quill type 1 1/8 stem, which is really nice, but I am not sure if it will work with the headset in regard to keeping things tight.. normally , you fit the HS in and put the ahead stem onto the exposed bit of 1 1/8 steerer then tighten down to adjust. if by using this quill type stem would it work ? I dont think it will but unsure, would I have to go for a 1 1/8 old type headset that you have to use spanners on to adjust , if available, also would the stem being 1 1/8 fit into a 1 1/8th set of forks ?

Any help would be appreciated, I think I have explained this properly,

Cheers

Si

Quil stems only work with threaded headsets. You can adapt a ahead stem to a threaded headset, but not the other way around.

You can get some threaded headsets that dont require spanners to tighten/adjust. Kona impact for example, and im sure there was a CK unit that operated in a similar fashion.

Thats what I thought ! I have seen Mavic and Kona types of headsets before that dont require the ol spanners.. would this mean sourcing a 1 1/8 threaded fork ? erm .would a threadless 1 1/8 steerer be able to be threaded to work or would the dia be all wrong ?

You should be able to thread a threadless steerer. Just make sure the ID of the steerer is large enough to take your quill stem. For example Pace steel steerers have a larger ID than the Alu Steerer.

Also i wouldnt consider threading an aluminium steerer as the threads would be a little on the feeble side.

I wouldnt recommend cutting a thread into a ahead steerer fork. esp not an alu steerer.
what do you want to use? ahead or threaded forks? king top section can be easily changed between threaded or ahead (just have to buy the new part, aspirevelotech on ebay recommended ;)
i've got 1 1/8 rockshox judy steerers in both threaded & ahead for sale if thats a help?

Judy Steerers..

Hi scant, thanks, but I am going to go rigid on this one...

Ideally just want to use a headset that I dont have to mess around with and does not come loose every 5 yards..

Gotta go the IBIS is Here.... :D :D :D

kings only loosen up when doing long Alp length DHs when using a star fangled nut with long travel forks, easily solved with a different form of headlock instead of the SFN.
ibis titanium frame? nice :D

Scant

Nah its not the Ti Mojo, I Wish.. !! just the nice ol steel one... , never had a problem with a king ever coming loose, thats why I would like to put one on it , But I have been offered a Nice Ti 1 1/8th stem for a fair price, but its a quill type , so really not sure what to do ? Issues with Fork/Headset selection.. ?
