This is a p*ss take, isn't it?
You get bits for free at your LBS cos you give the LBS bod free food when he comes into the shop that you work at???
Struggling with the legality of this, if it isn't a p*ss take

Its only some fried bloody potato's on a Saturday, and he has so far given me 2 crappy worthless chainrings from the scrap bin and a screw in brake boss from the bottom of his toolbox....

Some of the regulars come in and their kids get more freebies than that (bagels, donuts and other baked goods) without the expectation or offer of anything in return.... its just the community looking after each other, so keep ya knickers on

In terms of trade being taken away from local bike shops, I think they are more worried about the likes of big chain sotores muscling in. My LBS has a Snow & Rock, an Edinborough Cycles, and 2 Evans stores to contend with, before they will even break sweat worrying about the lost business through people changing the odd brake cable or trueing a wheel in their kitchens

At least you're happy with their work.

A shop near my former office charged me a similar mount to replace a bent spoke & then I found they'd simply "straightened" it with a pliers.

I guess they didn't have an appropriate spoke (all-black disk 29ers) & took the lazy option? Needles to say, I never went back.

And then there's the headset race that seemed to have been fitted to my carbon fork using a hammer; the headset that wasn't tensioned before the stem was tightened; and the rear puncture they charged for but forgot to fix (that was a different shop, but all happened on 1 visit; at a "top end" test center for Nicolai etc.).

Not so much  as

I do as much of my own work as possible; at least I care enough to do it properly.

Iwish............really sorry to mention this, but a DIY plumber is not a professional plumber. I worked on bike for years before going into the trade...it's very very different, standards and techniques are very different or should be. Modern bikes have huge stresses put on them and you are dealing with potentially harming or killing someone if you get it wrong.

When i did a season at coed y brenin servicing their hire bike each afternoon ready for the next day.....it's a bit nerve racking thinking ' oh I hope i did a good job' what it that person is in the middle of nowhere injured because of me.

Most terrifying mechanicking I've ever done was with the Danish track squad. Even the simple stuff that you know it's impossible to do wrong "Did I remember to tighten that wheelnut" and checking it 15 times......

i refuse to take any of my bikes to my lbs. i do all my own work on them and buy all the parts online because the town i live in has 1 bike shop that only deals in bso's and the other is a halfords. but when you break it down a tenner to sort your wheels out aint bad really.

People in your situation can more easily be forgiven 8)

We'll come for you with the pitchforks when we've finished burning the other witches.

no deal :D if i were in a bind i would pay a tenner all day to sort my wheels. but since i can do it myself, i do.

I can't remember the last time I took a bike to a shop to be fixed. Don't mind using the LBS for wheel builds though as I haven't got a jig but I can see that changing soon.

Hard times so you have to look after No. 1

wot he said /\/\/\/\/\/\

Even though I have been restoring bikes since around the age of 15, 6 months in a busy bike shop opens your eyes to the potential pitfalls in every bike repair.

BTW, 6 months in said bike shop now means I'm a qualified

Riding

And

Time

Trial

engineer....
