    The Purple One

I was off of work sick today and got a little bored. I ended up buying a cheap saddle and a smallish 90’s steel bike to play with. Lower end campy equipped Bio Racer. Then I found some discounted bar tape and thought in for a penny, in for a pound. It’s done, there’s no going back. Needless to...

    STM Seat Post Timeline

Is there anybody that knows what decade the STM Rapid seat post was introduced to the market? I have seen the same post listed as 50’s/60’s and also 80’s. The post in question is the rapid single bolt version and has the laurel wreath logo and not the triangle with a rams head in it. Any help...

The saddle is now sitting pretty on the Laprade post, which is now inserted into the frame to the minimum mark. The height will be fine tuned when the pedals are back on.

Saturday update… Today I fitted a nice and clean Shimano Altus gear set that I bought cheaply. The Huret bits cleaned up well enough but I really didn’t like the look of them. I read the Altus equipment was aimed at the leisure market so I probably haven’t gained any performance and may have...

    Bagged Hoods

I knew I had them, it was just a question of where on earth did I put them? A 20 minute search of the garage in my random small parts stashes revealed the gold. These were thrown in as a freebie a few years back when I bought some Weinmann brakes for the semi-automatic adjusters for a bmx build...

I started watching these on eBay and an offer popped up so I bought one. I might lose the Claud Butler down tube and Majestic decals and replace them for the more attractive versions in gold. Classic block for the down tube and script for the Majestic.

Ok, update… I don’t think the decals or the badge are original, they are too bright and mostly unmarked. The Leisure Wheels decal is original, it predates the current Leisure Wheels bike shop which opened in 1985. I contacted the shop and their director Dan Busson varified that the Leisure...

A recent eBay purchase I had to make room for. I’m never happy tinkering with just one bike 🤣 This 1979 Claud Butler Majestic looks to be all original except for the usual replacements, bar tape, cables, tyres and saddle. She is very clean but does have some paint damage to the top tube and...

Thanks👍🏼 I agree, after comparing the body of the lever and the 165 hoods, they look pretty close. I’ll make a purchase soon.

I guess you guys like pics, so here’s a few of the gear set and levers. Not perfect but clean enough and usable. The alloy parts might get a very light polish, just to brighten them up a little.

This evening I thought I’d strip, clean and reassemble the Arabesque front mech. That didn’t take long and it went smoothly enough, it looks better for it so well worth the effort. So I thought why not do the rear mech too, what a bloody ball ache that turned out to be. The strip down and...

I took her out for a short ride last Saturday, she rode like a dream apart from the frazzled brake blocks performance. That was to be expected though. The nose of the saddle needs to be dropped a tad, otherwise I was happy with the riding position. I got home in one piece which bodes well for...

🤣 what a relief. This is exactly why I decided to join the forum, I’ve been building BMX bikes and it’s been quite some time since I’ve ridden or worked on anything geared. I will most likely be needing more help in the future too.

That’s good to know, thanks. This was an additional image the seller of my derailleur set sent me, the quality isn’t great but It looks like a cable stop in the area I’ve ringed in red. Please tell me that’s a cable stop 🤣

Thanks for your reply and the info. Yes, the down tube has stops on both sides. I’ll get some pics up tomorrow evening, here’s one of the drive side from the listing pics for now. The left side stop is in the same position. Thanks again
