Why do we want rare, complicated stuff?! Amp forks kupput

It appears that you have a pair of AMP F1 forks . These have a single centrally positioned compression spring backed up by an elastomer plug which stops the spring from coil binding at full travel . The F2 version is similar albeit with slightly changed geometry . The F3 and F4 variants have...

Trying to figure out who made this

Looks to be a 1980 frame with some Campag bits . Most likely had a respray at some time so makers and tubing decals no longer visible . Could be a Mercian ? probably easier to take a decent photo and list it in the road bike section with its frame number , as its clearly not an MTB

Saddle comfort - Turbo vs Unicanitor

Thanks for the link to your new bike which I had not spotted . It looks like a really interesting find , with what looks like all original period correct components in very good condition (except saddle !) The Italian bars may be the best clue to its origins ? Have you checked the date codes on...

Saddle comfort - Turbo vs Unicanitor

Looks fine , go for it ! Saying that , I have never heard of a Cinelli Unicanitor Saddle being fitted to a MTB mainly because the revolutionary plastic saddle design existed way before there was such a thing as a MTB and as such its primary market was the road bike in various competitive forms

Saddle comfort - Turbo vs Unicanitor

The original Unicanitor moulded plastic saddle was available with different levels of comfort determined by the amount of padding fitted to the shell before the leather outer was fitted . A Unicanitor no.1 had no padding at all , with progressively more padding until you reached no.4 ( I think )...

Raleigh maverick circa 1985 brake studs & bottom bracket.

To retain the period look , the original brakes were Dia Compe Cantilevers with external springs I believe them to be Dia Compe 980 GC , though I can't quite reach my own bike to confirm

Help with removing Yo Eddy ‘91 press fit BB

No personal experience of this bike but have fitted new press fit ball bearings to Viscount Aerospace B/B in the past Its not worth trying to save the existing bearings , drive them out as suggested above ( the first is the hardest ) and make a note of any part numbers and preferably the size...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

The Nitto riser bars and stem are a departure from the Nitto bullmoose bars that were originally specified for all three of these Overburys models . However upon reflection I suspect that the limited range of fit options associated with bullmoose bars led to the installation of the more...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

The view of the top of the rear triangle shows the ESGE mudguard that had been shortened for convenience , to be replaced by an almost identical Bleumels product that I already had , also shortened . The rack still had a ' makers ' label declaring it to be a Nimrod Product , however , based in...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

When I first saw the bike my initial response was to start again ie. shot blast and re - finish with new decals etc replacing missing items so that it would appear exactly as it left the shop . This remained my intention as I gradually worked through the various components until I just had the...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

The rear mech is not the correct one , luckily I already had a couple of originals , one NIB with an Overburys price ticket for £24.95 ! the other a very lightly used example . These are both Shimano RD-M700 SP Deer Head mechs , the SP standing for Super Plate which is a method of increasing...

    Suggest some cantilevers!

The Scott Pedersen SE is currently available new from SJS for under £10 ! Its the rear version manufactured by Suntour , as you probably already know Suntour never produced a front version , they considered it too dangerous ! However Pedersen themselves made a front version with the same...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

Here we have the Shimano Biopace Crankset model FC-6206 which was available from 1983 until 1986 This example has 48/38/28 teeth , 170mm cranks and a JD date code . It has Shimano PD-MX15 pedals with no sign of wear to the gripping pins . The bike was specified with Suntour Beartrap XCII...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

Taking a closer look you can see the remains of an ESGE mudguard , a Michelin gum walled tyre ( 26 - 2.125 ) with a centre ridge and virtually all its original depth of tread ( about 4mm ) The cantilever brake is a BR-MC70 with again as new brake blocks . The unbranded rims , with similarly...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

Reading ' Overbury's 1985 Literature ' posted by raidan73 recently , it contains a press release dated February 1985 announcing the arrival of the Pioneer ' with sloping top tube ' I presume this must be a typing error ? Exactly who 'invented' the sloping top tube is quite another matter

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

On close inspection it was clear that with the exception of a replacement rear mech all the correct Shimano Deer Head ( XT) components were in place . Though I was expecting Bullmoose bars , of which more later . Its interesting to look at this bike in the context of its time ( early 1985 ) what...

The last Overburys Crossfell to ever leave the shop !

After Overburys had been closed for around 10 years the building was sold in the spring of 2021 and the contents removed . This Overburys Crossfell was discovered in the remains of the collapsed workshop at the rear of the shop
