    Differences between Shimano hubs?

Another great piece of information, thank you. I am slowly but surely starting to believe shimano's low and mid range components are now better than the top of the line stuff simply because the low end of today uses tried and tested tech, the same shimano was using 10-20 years ago. And i...

    Differences between Shimano hubs?

I had no ideea that the lower tier models use plain steel vs stainless on the inside, i guess as long as they're greased they can't corrode anyway? Thanks for the tip on the sora hubs, very useful indeed. Found a couple of ultegra 6800 hubs for 70 quid a pair, that's more expensive than...

Cyclists should also drink petrol instead of beer and occupy at least as much space on the road as a Ford Transit, while making equal amounts of smoke and noise. Because- we're all the same.

    Differences between Shimano hubs?

I don't think you are heavier than me, i weigh 136 kg and in the last 14 months i have been riding a 2004 Merida with 32 hole ultegra 6500 hubs laced to standard alexrims rims and 23mm tires. No spoke was lost, but i managed to get the real wheel out of true once when passing train tracks, this...

    Differences between Shimano hubs?

Thanks for the encouraging advice, it's true that with traditional hubs one has to be aware of the tightness of the nuts and the condition of the grease. That being said, my best hubs are the Campagnolo Record found on a cheap 1983 Basso road bike. Mine seem to be running on a special oil...

    Life in the fast lane.

Next time use better drugs(maybe ask Lance?). Riding a bike on the motorway is not a good ideea precisely because it makes it difficult to escape the police. Try chasing a fit cyclist on a country road or on city streets, the police car is at a disadvantage. Well, they never caught ME anyway...

    Differences between Shimano hubs?

If anyone can answer this it's you retro freaks(happy to be a member here). I am thinking about replacing the generic oem hubs on one of my road bikes, but i'm confused about what shimano hubs to choose. I know ultegra hubs are just about perfect and last a long time, but design wise isn't...

Very confused about riding position(s) - mtb vs road

Somewhat true, but then again a road race bike isn't built with comfort in mind, it's a racing bike. There is however a solution, buy a endurance road frame with a compact handlebar and raise it using spacers and a stem with pozitive angle. This way you will have a more upright position...

"8 speed cassettes have big gaps vs 11 speed"

I was looking at a modern bike review the other day and the bike featured an 8 speed cassette, being part of the shimano claris groupset. Anyway, the reviews struck me in one area, which is the difference between the old 8 speed cassette(and older) and the new 11, 12 speed cassettes which are...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

I like how carbon fiber frames look, but i don't trust them because i'm heavy but also they are definitely weaker in the face of wear and tear than metal frames. When i ride my 20, 40 year old steel frame i never worry about cracks or the frame coming apart under me, not even during crashes...

Nobody minds anything, good to hear your opinion man. This is a free topic, hippie style. It's all about the bikes!

    Do modern groupsets last less?

Nobody likes Ebikes, until they need one. I am happy that an ebike helped you get back on a bike and even though i don't want to think about it, if one day i have to ditch my old bikes for an electrically assisted one i will do it. It's all about riding, doesn't matter much what bike you...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

The notion that fat people cannot enjoy a lighter bike is just incorrect. Let me explain. I weight now 135 kg and much enjoy riding my 9.5 kg road bike iver my old 14 kg vintage mtb. It's because the road bike is so easy to mive that i end up being much faster and doing more km on it than on...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

I like that room. Just old bikes and cassette decks stuffed together, sort of like a retro nut's treasure cave. Thumbs up from me and thanks for the info. Still, does STI work with an italian cassette from the 80s?

    Do modern groupsets last less?

Let's just agree on that. What about cost? With the money i spend on a 12 speed chain or cassette, i can get 2-3 8/9 speed parts for the bikes i already have. One more issue- i cannot help but hate the look and engineering behind 1X drivetrains. Who would ever want a bike whose cassette is...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

Well the new stuff works better when new but what about 20 years later? If you do 10.000 miles a year and ride hard nothing will last you long, and have you seen how expensive a 12 speed cassette and chain are? With that money alone i could buy a totally functional vintage mtb, even if in ave...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

It's OK, keep them coming. This is a great thread. In the defense of 90s bike stuff, i've seen how the british maintain their bikes. OK more like not maintain their bikes. Let's be open about this, it rains so much in England yet nobody seems to clean and lube their chain, never heard so many...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

I agree that as a rule of thumb, modern bikes fit better and are more comfortable. Personally i hate the levers on old road bikes, i simply cannot use them, they cut through my hand while riding if that makes sense. Why did they make them so skinny, and the ergonomics are very awkward...

    Do modern groupsets last less?

This is true. Nowadays shimano just uses black shiny paint, 20 years ago they did it differently. I still have black painted LX groupsets but even the black paint on them was something else, and the aluminium surfaces were very nice. Not to mention M900, they looked amazing even after 15 years...
