Airlite hubs - to brass washer spoke heads or not?

If it were me I would definitely use washers on each spoke head to close any gap between the elbow and flange, using more than one washer on each spoke head if needed. Stress relieving the wheel after building would also help to build a strong wheel.

The hubs look great. A worthwhile project, and very interesting to follow.

Help identifying Hary Hall frame Ted Pritchard

Oh yes, the cyclo-cross events on Chobham Common! The Farnborough Cycling Club Sunday club runs sometimes used to stop off at Chobham Common when a cyclo-cross event was taking place, and then continue the run when the cyclo-cross events finished. I particularly remember a trike cyclo-cross...

Re: 1963 Carlton Catalina - long term restoration project A really lovely build. I do have a soft spot for Carltons, and you do a lovely job of rebuilding them.

Help identifying Hary Hall frame Ted Pritchard

Back in the mid 60s I remember Ted telling me that his frames were produced by other builders, but that he had built his frames in the early days. He was knowledgable about frame building, and advised me on several points when I was myself building a frame in 1966. I had bought the 531 tubeset...

    Freewheel query

I have a Sachs Maillard 6-speed, which is 31.7mm width, whereas the width of a Sachs Maillard 7-speed that I have is 36.5mm across. I have also used a mix of 6 and 7-speed sprockets and spacers on a 7-speed body to give a width of 30.6mm, which has been very handy to fit a 6-speed freewheel on...

Single speed free wheel question .

Back in the early 1960s I used a three-speed block (I can't remember the make) on a fixed threading for a while, although I felt uneasy about the unsupported thread of the block (maths lessons at school had alerted me about 'moments' and 'forces' – although I have now forgotten the details)...

    Brian Rourke 653 custom RR

That is a super frame with a lovely choice of components – in lovely condition, too. It is great to hear how it has been owned by you since the 80s, and see the changes that have been made.

    Carlton Clubman 1969

Wow, what a gorgeous bike. I, too, love the colour and especially like the colour combination with the brown of the saddle and bar tape. Having ridden fixed-wheel a lot in the 60s and 70s I do love seeing a tasteful fixed/single-speed restoration. And this one is not just tasteful, it is...

    1.6mm non butted spokes?

I rebuilt a pair of Gran Sport hubs into a set of HP rims in the late 70s using 14/16 gauge spokes, and I drilled out each spoke hole with a very slightly larger drill bit, and slightly enlarged the countersink, as 'keithglos' suggested. I still have the hubs, and will be rebuilding them again...

    1926-9 Peugeot

Re: 1926 Peugeot What an elegant bike. And very interesting to see the tied and soldered spoke crossings - I have only seen this done before in the 60s, with track wheels. It will be lovely to see it restored.

Very nice. A great choice of components, and lovely mix of finishes with red and black paint, and alloy and chrome.

    Mystery frame with support struts

The seat stay looks a bit bent just above the 'lumpy joint' in the first picture perhaps indicating damage to the upper seat stay. The joints could be anything from weld, brazing, or even soft solder (like wiped joints in the days of lead plumbing) or resin filler. It could be an idea to...

    Loose headset cups

I have used Loctite 638 in the past on headsets with slightly loose cups. It has a much stronger bond than thread locking compounds. More info can be found on the Loctite site.

Pecking Order Back in the Day

I joined a cycling club in 1964 and noticed that members rode frames from a large variety of builders, and I cannot remember two frames from the same builder. Another nearby club had a number of members who owned Holdworths, but again various builders' frames could be seen on clubruns, or at...

    1966 Mercian Superlight Rebuild
