    Falcon Cotswold Road Bike

I have been given a Falcon Cotswold bike. I estimate is is from the 1990s but it is fitted with cantilever brakes and at some point I believe the downtube shifters were replaced with Shimano RSX shifters. The shifters have resisted all my attempts to clean including soaking for a week in white...

    Dating a Holdsworth Super Mistral

Re: I really don't want to repaint it. It would have to be enamelled for the two tone, as it was originally, and even if I do the prep and the decals, that costs. As I remove the tape, I am finding more and more paint damage. One Mistral decal has been destroyed, the other has a missing...

    Holdsworth Super Mistral

The Holdsworth Mistral I have just started working on looks very close to the pics above. However, the Serial No 10392 looks nowhere near. The 1st digit looks like a 1, but the left part has damage. Not knowing the type face it could be a 4, if the cross part did not extend past the vertical...

    roadster chain case wanted

Re: I have just got back a 1949 freshly painted Humber Sports frame. When I got the bike, it had been painted in household gloss, but I managed to find the original colour on the steerer tube. The photo posted looks exactly the same, and I want to know if there were ever decals or pinstriping...

    Dating a Holdsworth Super Mistral

Re: Holdsworth Yes. It has the small banner. Thats how I identified it as a Mistral. As you can see from the photos I have a lot to remove and certainly the brakes will come off for cleaning so I will check the hole. Im now debating as there is wear on the decals if I need to repaint. Ive...

    Dating a Holdsworth Super Mistral

I am just starting on this Holdsworth Mistral. I think its a Super Mistral, and I'm trying to date it and work out what equipment it started with. As you will see from the attached pics, it's two tone colour, fully chromed front forks. The head badge is a bit faded but is very dark at the...

    84 Holdsworth Pro

Re: 84 Holdsworth Mistral I have been given a number opf vinatage bikes to restore. The most interesting is Holdsworth Mistral. 1. It appears to have a 5 digit BB serial number. I am not sure of the 1st digit as the edge is damaged but it looks like a 1. The whole serial no is 10392. 2. The...

Spacing for Holdsworth Monsoon and Simplex Rear Derailleur

I am finishing restoring a Holdsworth Monsoon. The rear spacing is 126mm, but the Weinmann big flange hubs I used when building the wheels have resulted in a 10mm gap between the frame and the top gear cog. Unfortunately the Simplex derailleur wont reach to low cog although it has plenty of...

    Holdsworth Monsoon Frame Numbering

Interesting. I restored a very old Monsoon frame, but stayed with the original spec derailleur which was not easy to locate and restore, but it fitted correctly on the rear forks. I used Weinmann brakes and wheel rims, Normandy wide flange hubs, and alloy handlebars and stem, and alloy chaingear.

What year is that Peugeot tandem ?

Re: I am just finishing a 1979 Peugeot Tandem. It had been stored for 30 years in a garage and the frame was well rusted. I have fixed all that re-chromed the headset and small components. Fortunately the frame decals are not a problem so the frame is fine. I am sure that almost all parts are...

    Holdsworth Monsoon Frame Numbering

Re: I am rebuilding a Holdsworth Monsoon 24176. The frame is fully restored and I have sourced a Simplex derailleur, but I am unsure what wheels, brakes, chainsets were supplied as original. All the images I have seen have been updated. Can anyone help.

    1955 Holdsworth Monsoon build

Re: Thanks for the update on the frame. My frame is defintely a Simplex drop hanger. I know this, because it was originally cut off, and I had to put it back on!. I hope I won't regret this, as I am struggling to get a Simplex single wheel derailleur to go with it! There seem to be plenty of...

    1955 Holdsworth Monsoon build

Re: I am restoring a similar Holdsworth Monsoon frame. Mine is older and I need to find a Simplex or Hurex Tour De France derailleur, but that's an aside. The frame had been so badly painted and repainted so badly that it was impossible to tell the original colour, so I chose a cherry red. I...

    Trek 2000 - 1991

I have just bought a Trek 2000 frame. The condition appeared very poor, but on examination, it is just oxide causing bubbling, and I expect it will look as good as new. It has a clear serial no, which has me date the frame to 1991. Decals may prove a problem, because it appears to be a...

Raleigh Equipe and Criterium decals / stickers

Re: Where can I buy Raleigh Equipe stickers. I've just sent the frame to be shotblasted and I need fresh decals.

Dawes Galaxy - Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly

Re: Hammerite I have used Hammerite on bicycle frames for years. If you need to wait weeks for it to dry you aren't using it properly. I use Hammerite on heavy old bikes. I recently restored an old 60's Royal Enfield frame. It was very pitted, but Hammerite in just a couple of coats made it...

    Stove enamelling vs powder-coating

Re: Jackson I came across these postings whilst looking at stove enamelling v powder coating. I was quite surprised to see Jacksons held up as a quality reference. When Hetchins still had a shop in Southend, I took my curly Hetchins to them, whilst living in Sheffield - quite a long drive. I...

    Dawes Bike - Identifying Model

Re: That's what I was trying to avoid. This would force the cables to be either side of the downtube, instead of below. I did consider using stops, so that bare cable would run along the downtube, but since I'm modifying a racing bike to commute the recipient between home and his allotment (...
